Additional Information

Alya, a Palestinian Israeli girl, and Yuval, a Jewish Israeli boy, live a short distance from each other in Israel, yet they have totally different and separate lives. Then one summer they have a chance to meet when they attend Peace Camp, a day camp operated by Givat Haviva, an educational organization that works toward Jewish-Arab peace.

At Peace Camp, the Jewish and Palestinian children experience two weeks of fun in close contact with each other. They participate in sports, arts and crafts projects, field trips, and other camp activities. They begin to understand what their shared ancient homeland means to the "other side." Most of all, they learn not to be afraid of each other. Maybe they even become friends.

This eye-opening story offers hope for breaking down the distrust and violence that define the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The children's experiences at Peace Camp may well help their generation build a foundation for living together peacefully in one homeland.

Sharing anything seems tough. In a family, in a community and certainly the Muslims, Arabs, and Jews who live in either Israel or Palestine. And based on all that has happened in the Middle East in the last 50 years, sharing a homeland seems almost impossible. Until I read "Sharing Our Homeland: Palestinian and Jewish Children at Summer Peace Camp." Peace Camp is a perfect way of acknowledging what has come before, and setting up specific ways of helping our children to see those from "the other side " in a different context.

I have a firm belief that in almost all cases, if we can present our children with positive possibilities and examples at an early age, we have a chance in creating lines of communication that are not strained by political or historic policy. Learning respect begins at a very early age. Friendship, too. Learning to listen. Getting children to play together, no matter where they come from, no matter what race, religion or economic background is... Read more
"Sharing Our Homeland: Palestinian and Jewish Children at Summer Peace Camp" is a beautiful photographic essay and documentary on a Palestinian and Jewish Children's Peace Camp held at Givat Haviva, in Israel, near where both Alya, a Palestinian girl camper, and Yuval, Jewish boy camper, live. Because of language and cultural differences and because of an ongoing unresolved armed conflict over common territory, Yuval and Alya might never meet or have a chance to get to know each other and perhaps become friends if it were not for experiences such as Peace Camp. Everything at Peace Camp is bilingual, in Arabic and Hebrew. Campers are divided into small groups with counselors who speak their languages. The goal of Peace Camp is to build bridges and understanding among campers. Over several days, Peace campers participate in many ordinary summer camp activities together, playing water games, spending time at the beach, creating arts and crafts, etc. There are lots of fun activities and... Givat Haviva, a non-profit organization in Israel that promotes peace between people of Jewish and Arab descent, hosts a summer peace camp for two weeks. Close to 200 Israeli children, half of them Jewish and half Palestinian, descend on the camp from their homes all over Israel to have fun and work toward peace. With a long history of Isreali and Palestinian conflict, children are often caught in the middle of deep-seated hostility, misunderstanding, and violence. By introducing these children to each other in a neutral setting and engaging them in a host of educational and recreational activities, the camp organizers aim to build a foundation of mutual understanding and respect.

With its extensive narrative and action-packed photographs, this non-fiction children's book provides an interesting glimpse of a bold experiment that encourages children to work toward peace in a region plagued by long-term conflict. Included in the text are some important lessons about the... Read more
