Additional Information

President Barack Obama’s first trip abroad in his second term took him to Israel and the Palestinian West Bank, where he despondently admitted to those waiting for words of encouragement, “It is a hard slog to work through all of these issues.” Contrast this gloomy assessment with Obama’s optimism on the second day of his first term, when he appointed former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell as his special envoy for Middle East peace, boldly asserting that his administration would “actively and aggressively seek a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians.” How is it that Obama’s active and aggressive search for progress has become mired in the status quo?

Writer and political analyst Josh Ruebner charts Obama’s journey from optimism to frustration in the first hard-hitting investigation into why the president failed to make any progress on this critical issue, and how his unwillingness to challenge the Israel lobby has shattered hopes for peace.

Written in a clear and accessible style by the advocacy director of a national peace organization and former Middle East analyst for the Congressional Research Service, Shattered Hopes offers an informed history of the Obama administration’s policies and maps out a true path forward for the United States to help achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Extremely well researched book by Josh Ruebner lays bare the double standards of the Obama admin/US foreign policy when it comes to its professed commitment to human rights on the one hand and its military, diplomatic, and financial underwriting of Israel's systematic human rights abuses against Palestinians on the other. The book's comprehensive use of recent human rights literature on the conflict is exceptional and the chapter "We don't do Gandhi very well" is particularly effective in demonstrating the hollowness of Obama's words when it comes to his administration opposing anything Palestinians are doing on the ground to confront Israel's brutal policies. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in learning about the Middle East conflict and the role of the US in frustrating almost any hope in resolving it.
Through tireless documentation and excellent analogy, Mr. Ruebner has presented a case for Palestinian justice that flies in the face of US policy. Despite well intentioned dialogue from presidents dating back to Nixon, the pressure exerted by the Jewish lobby in America is exposed in events explored in this book. When a president (Obama) goes before the annual AIPAC delegation and sheepishly states, " Even friends have disagreements", after just being slandered by Netanyahu, you know there's power in the Jewish vote and in its well oiled lobby machine. Case in point, thanks for the "Super PAC" Supreme Court decision, donors such as Sheldon Adelson, in an attempt to support Israel friendly Newt Gingrich, and then Mitt Romney, pledged up to $100 million to defeat Obama. Ruebner dissects the events known as "The Peace Process", as presented by the US with a undeniable bias favoring Israeli interests. Although this writing precedes the John Kerry mission, much of... Add Ruebner to the list of accomplished authors who have shed much needed light on the zionist agenda (Christian and non) of our politicians and government institutions. Carter, Mearsheimer and Walt, Beinart, among others, are all excellent reads, and now Ruebner trumps them all in his own way. The sheer dishonesty that the politicians, media, lobbyists, and others perpetrate on the American public is exposed for what it exactly is - propaganda to ensure that taxpayer dollars flood into a foreign country at our expense, and the expense and suffering of millions of Palestinians. Ruebner points out that we as citizens are complicit in the illegal activities that our country endorses directly and indirectly due to our unconditional support and financing of policies that violate international law. Carter's book is great, Mearsheimer and Walt incredible and informatively eye opening, Beinart's exceptionally well researched and written. Josh Reubner's is that and more; it edifies and...
