When they announced the sale of our company at a meeting, I had no idea what I was going to do. I'd moved my entire life for that job. I had a lease on an apartment and was two states away from my family. I didn't want to have to move back home, not with him there.

The very next day they called another meeting. I couldn't imagine what they had to say could have been any worse than the meeting before.

It was bad enough that I'd gotten drunk for the first time in three years after the first meeting. I'd barely been able to get my ass to work the next day and looked awful. My best friend, who'd gotten me drunk, walked in looking chipper as ever.

I sat in the back of the room, scooted down in my chair, and closed my eyes. All I wanted was for everyone around me to keep the noise level down before my head exploded. All I had to do was get through that meeting and everything would be fine. That was what I thought anyway.

They announced that the new owner had come in to meet us and let us know that our jobs were safe. That was a good thing. Then they began to introduce him.

He was a retired Pittsburgh Pirate.

He lived in Michigan.

It couldn't be, I thought. There was no way.

"Hello"

As soon as he spoke, goosebumps covered my arms.

"My name is Scott Reid. Some of you may remember me as Scottie."

I felt like I was going to be sick. My world was spinning.

When I stood to introduce myself and our eyes connected, I knew I was in trouble.

He looked just as happy to see me as I was to see him.

The only man I'd ever loved, the one that destroyed me, was the one in control of my fate at the company.
