Having purchased this SideSwipe Paddle product(first time for me to ignore negative reviews and images)I have to say my intuition was correct. The only way that these folks could have had issues, was to misuse the product, or, order the wrong size for the KitchenAid Stand Mixer Bowl size.
For instance, if you do not properly adjust the bowl height to provide loose, but adequate tension of the paddle to the bowl as the paddle is in motion, it will, like any paddle or hook attachment, pretty much self-distruct! Or, mixing a product that is to thick and heavy for the purpose of this paddle (It Is Not A Bread Hook). Typically you would only want to use it for the Creaming Method, light batters and adding chocolate chips or nuts to that mix without causing damage to them.
The item comes with a very clear list of things to do, and not to do. The SideSwipe Paddle is well constructed, and moreover, the #1 recommendation by America's Test Kitchen (They also got it...
I got this for my Kitchenaid Pro 600 [bowl lift] mixer. If you have a Pro 600, you understand that small-batch cooking isn't well-received by the mixer. Whenever I would make, well, pretty much anything that tends to stick to the bowl I'd have to stop the mixer several times and scrape down the sides and try and get up everything off the bottom. Again, a real PITA with a bowl-lift mixer. Even after mixing I'd be left with some areas on the walls that weren't incorporated properly. So, I came up with some options: 1) get the miniature bowl for the Pro 600, 2) get a SideSwipe, or 3) get a Beater Blade.
I didn't get the mini bowl because it is around $60. So, it was down to the SideSwipe (SS) and Beater Blade (BB). Biggest pros for the SS: it has a metal core, is slightly better at scraping sides than the BB, and it has gaps that allow chunks of stuff (chocolate chips, etc.) to pass without jamming anything. Biggest pros of the BB: it is slightly better at scraping the...
THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT FIT COSTCO PRO600 MIXER: kf26m2cob pro 600 design 6qt 575 watt
I'm not basing this review on the product not fitting, i'll need to figure out the correct one and order again. Probably just going to email kitchenaid with the model number and end up with the overpriced one they sell.
The core is made of metal but the rest of it is plastic. it is sturdy enough for something like mashed potatoes but i wouldnt recommend using this on a stiff cookie dough. the fins seem to be the right blend of stiffness and length so that they should be able to scrape adequately. for 27 bucks i would have expected a sturdier construction. there are clear markings where too much glue was applied to make the silicon thing stick. i would gladly pay more for this if it was made of metal throughout and had the silicon part cast on. seems a little janky for 27 bucks though, and i can see how people reported it shattering.
