By 1996 John Hiatt, the man for whom the term 'songwriter's songwriter' could easily have been phrased , was promoting his 13th studio album, the 1995 released Walk On, having recently signed with Capitol Records following his most successful era to date with former record company A&M, a label for whom he'd recorded between 1987and 1993. The album had been well received critically and was commercially successful too. Hiatt toured the record in early 1996, and on January 21st - with The Nashville Queens in tow - he performed this superb in-studio session at the famous Sigma Sound in Philadelphia, in front of a small, invited audience. Featuring a set consisting of 11 of Walk On's 14 cuts, augmented by a lengthy finale of Bring The Family's 'Thing Called Love' - here dedicated to Bonnie Raitt, the lady who covered the song to huge success (she kept our tour bus rolling for a few years I can tell you that, John informs those in attendance), this is a delightful, intimate show by a tight, dynamic group performing music by one of America's finest ever composers - just ask Bob Dylan, The Searchers, Delbert McClinton, Willy DeVille, Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Joe Bonamassa, Willie Nelson, Three Dog Night, Joan Baez, Paula Abdul, Buddy Guy, the Desert Rose Band, Jimmy Buffett, Mandy Moore, Iggy Pop, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rosanne Cash, Suzy Bogguss, Jewel, Aaron Neville, Jeff Healey, Keith Urban, Joe Cocker, Chaka Khan, Paulini or one of numerous others who've covered John Hiatt songs across the years.
