Brought to You by The Unemployed Philosophers Guild

The origins of the Unemployed Philosophers Guild are shrouded in mystery. Some accounts trace the Guild's birth to Athens in the latter half of the 4th century BCE. Allegedly, several lesser philosophers grew weary of the endless Socratic dialogue endemic in their trade and turned to crafting household implements and playthings. (Hence the assertions that Socrates quaffed his hemlock poison from a Guild-designed chalice, though vigorous debate surrounds the question of whether it was a "disappearing" chalice.)

Others argue that the UPG dates from the High Middle Ages, when the Philosophers Guild entered the world of commerce by selling bawdy pamphlets to pilgrims facing long lines for the restroom. Business boomed until 1211 when Pope Innocent III condemned the publications. Not surprisingly, this led to increased sales, even as half our membership was burned at the stake.

More recently, revisionist historians have pinpointed the birth of the Guild to the time it was still cool to live in New York City's Lower East Side. Two brothers turned their inner creativity and love of paying rent towards fulfilling the people's needs for finger puppets, warm slippers, coffee cups, and cracking up at stuff.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

It's cheaply made but it's also cheaply priced. It's just a tall white candle usually used for a saints candle with a thin paper slapped on it. BUT!!! The image on the paper is quality and the back of the candle has a witty little blurb about "St. Shakespeare." Would definitely recommend to my Shakespeare-loving friends. My only real complaint is that the paper with the image was not slapped on evenly so now Shakespeare looks at me a little more askance than I would like. Despite this, I absolutely adore my candle.
For substance this gets a full 5 stars. Saint Vonnegut is my favorite in the world, and I only wish he were still around. The world needs people like him.

The missing star is because the candle wrapper has a pretty significant air bubble (between the glass and the wrapper) that spans about half the height of the candle. It's not noticeable from far away, but up close it is.

Nice unscented candle about 8” high and burns slowly. A good reminder that true knowledge is knowing that you know nothing and that a woman made equal to man becomes his superior and that Socrates was too honest a man to be a politician. The only question is: if Socrates and Aristotle had a fight, who would win?
