Though they were part of the UK punk scene, Buzzcocks had a knack for catchy hooks and lovelorn lyrics to rival any power pop group -- especially on singles like "What Do I Get," "Ever Fallen in Love," "Promises" and "Everybody's Happy Nowadays." The original 'Singles Going Steady' did a great job of collecting these and other singles / B-sides from their first couple years on United Artists (1977-79). I'd say the additional tracks on the 2001 expanded reissue (which I recently received as an early birthday gift from my dad) -- including one more 1979 single ("You Say You Don't Love Me" b/w "Raison d'être") and six EP tracks from 1980 ('Part 1 - 3') -- are less consistent but offer more bang for your buck.

The album is loaded with some very good songs. I would recommend giving at least the following songs a listen: "Orgasm Addict", "What Do I Get", "Promises", "Harmony in my Head", Whatever Happened to ..." ," Oh S***", "Autonomy", and Something's Gone Wrong Again". I thought these were all very good songs, and as a result if you think as I do, you might be better off just buying the album. As far as any similar artist and album, I was reminded of The Ramones self titled album as I listened to it. You might as well consider listening to other songs as well on this album as their quality isn't far behind the ones I listed.
Don't need many words to describe this, as I probably agree with everyone who gave it 5 stars. As for sonic quality of this vs. previous release... this is better.

Re: extra tracks
The original number, and sequence, of songs was perfect. The extras just get in the way imho. Except "You Say You Don't Love Me" which is up to the same standard as the rest of the songs on the original album, although I guess it didn't fit in with the original concept.

So yea, buy this record, unless you don't like well-crafted, sophisticated 3 minute (mostly) songs. The songs that are longer than 3 minutes? They work, too.

If you love this record (yes, I'm old enough to have bought the "record" when it was released) and your friend doesn't, drop that friend. This is more important.
