I have already built a few off-grid photovoltaic systems with golfcart batteries and pure sine wave inverters, when I saw that simple plug-in micro-inverters are now available I jumped on this one immediately. Hookup is simple, has a wide DC input voltage range, and seems to work as advertised. The big question I am sure a lot of you have is- will it turn my electric meter backwards? Yes it will. But that is NOT a good thing! I have been working in the metering industry 12 years and have extensive experience with NET and production metering. Unless you have an electric meter that is specifically marked as "NET" or "BI-DIRECTIONAL" it is NOT a good idea to turn it backwards. Modern solid-state meters are specifically programmed to measure the energy flowing through the meter, and are NOT capable of measuring WHICH DIRECTION the energy is flowing unless it is specifically programmed to do so. Even if you still have an old mechanical meter with disk and dials there...
I was a little disappointed with this inverter. I have it connected in Parallel to 4 12 volt 100 watt panels and the max output I get is about 186 watts on a good day. I have independently tested each panel. I have since upgraded to the SolarPic 600 watt inverter and connected the same panels in series (2 and 2) for a 24 volt system as the inverter requires a minimum of 22 volts. I now get an easy 225 watts from the same panels. Still a little disappointing but I will take the 225 over 186 (and my wife is getting angry at all my DIY spending). I use a Kill-a-watt meter to measure the output of the inverter and a standard volt/amp meter to measure the output of the panels.
UPDATE: I got a nice email from Lin-Energy asking me to please consider the solar panels in the equation... So I bought 2 Renogy 12volt 100watt panels, hooked them up in parallel, connected them to the Solinba Inverter, and discovered that I got about 138 watts at Mid day. That is nearly the same...
Please read all, this is based on two purchases. Both required refunds over low quality and misleading Power Ratings.
The first unit I bought worked but was flimsy, had loose connectors, and shut down from Heat at 413 Watts. The Box says 500 Watts but the Manual says 400 Watts ( 12 Volt ) or 430 Watts (24 Volt ). OK,,, So why say 500 Watts on the Box??? The second unit had no AC Output out of the box. LED lights Red, then Blinks Green ( as it should ) but no Power Out. Waste of time installing a defective unit. Customer Service suggested that if I didn't like the Unit or the 430 Watt Maximum ( for 5 minutes ) confessed in the Manual, I should ( Find Another Manufacturer ). I did and am very happy with my Solar Project now.
