It’s one of the rules of the rock and roll road: the musicians snub the roadies because they’re uncultured grunts, and the roadies hate the musicians because they’re spoiled brats.
Meet Tryp, the rock star drummer for Killer Valentine, the hottest band on the planet. He's young, he's rich, and his whirlwind life of liquor, women, and screaming crowds is perfect, just as long as he never sobers up.
Elfie Tilsi has been a pyrotechnics technician (don’t call her a “roadie.”) with the breaking-out rock band Killer Valentine for two years, ever since she ran away from home.
The musicians of Killer Valentine are starting to crack from the unrelenting stress and limitless excess of touring. When the band manager tasks Elfie with babysitting Tryp, she tries being a little kind to him and quickly discovers that his problems are far deeper than the rock and roll lifestyle.
Can the love of a rock drummer and the pyromaniac roadie survive?

I bought this book last March, and somehow I've avoided reading it, even though Blair Babylon is one of my favorite authors. The reason is simple: I don't like dealing with alcoholics or drug abusers. Tryp is both. But I also knew that this author wouldn't be glamorizing his "rock-and-roll" lifestyle, and she didn't. He's just turned twenty-one, and his abuse is so out of control that Xan and Jason have bribed Elfie to be his babysitter, pouring him into bed at night and hauling him out in the mornings. They don't know how she does it, but she gets him to his DJ interviews sober and funny! Her secret is that she babies him until he's sober. No kidding, she has him sipping OJ to raise his blood sugars, then tempts him with bites of bland oatmeal to fight the nausea. She's KIND to him, and it shocks him speechless! But you come to realize that Elfie is just as broken as he is, and they are actually helping each other. Yes, it's a real love story, with some surprising...
Tryp is, in his own words, a "dirty rocker;" he parties, he drinks too much and he sleeps around A LOT. He's the talented drummer for the hot new band "Killer Valentine," and he's on the fast track to fame -- but he's also killing himself with alcohol while trying to drown out the demons from his past. Elfie is the female pyrotechnics wunderkind who helps create and control the fiery special effects for the Killer Valentine shows. She hides her delicate beauty behind oversized, shapeless clothes to discourage any repetition of the perverted attentions that warped her childhood and which continue to haunt her.
As Killer Valentine (led by the driven, enigmatic and charismatic lead singer Xan Valentine) struggles to deal with its own emerging fame and the constant rigors of touring without self-destructing, Elfie is given the unenviable task of babysitting Tryp in his drunken revels in order to keep him from missing interviews, practices, sound checks and...
Tryp is the drummer for the up and coming indie rock group Killer Valentine. His steady diet of booze and drugs has him one step away from rehab and two steps away from an early grave. He is desperately in need of help. Elfie is the band's pyrotechnician. She is very good at her job ("hasn't set anyone on fire yet"!). She is saving money so she can go back to school to become a chemical engineer. She is NOT a babysitter. However, she is full of compassion and exceeds expectations when it is her turn to get him back to his hotel room and make sure he is ready for a phone interview the next afternoon. To her dismay, "babysitting" Tryp has now become part of her job description.
Tryp and Elfie are both extremely likable characters. They both come from troubled backgrounds. Even at his worst, Tryp is lovable. It breaks my heart when he asks her to stay with him (after the first time she has to put him to bed) because "I'll die and no one will...
