As June 2016, this is the best reader for technical books and PDFs, period! Look no further. The size is perfect. The weight is perfect. The speed is decent. And the actual design is cool as well.
For years I was "forced" to use the iPad Air to read my MSSQL books. The Paperwhite and Oasis (have both) are too small. And the Kindle DXG born dead. So the iPad Air was the closest solution to what my problem was: decent reader for PDF and technical books. The main problem though, is that iPad air is a tablet with LCD screen. While battery is ok, it eventually dies after several hours of intense use. You can barely use it outdoors, and while still light, not ideal for reading in bed. It was my only choice for few years. It worked, but always wanted an eink device. Now with the Sony DPTS1, I no longer need the iPad with a PDF dedicated app. Sony's device does a better job in terms of battery life and actual screen size, moreover, my eyes are not complaining after 30...
I'm not sure why everyone is giving this 5 stars when the main purpose (viewing PDFs) is so laggy. I was hoping this would basically be a giant Kindle paperwhite without the backlight, while it is giant and it is e-ink it has some drawbacks, and also some benefits. Being able to directly right on your PDF is neat, although not why we bought it. I can see that as useful for law firms and real estate, but we use it for sheet music. It eliminates fumbling with papers and there is no glare on the screen like a tablet. Also it is very light-weight, very very light-weight. Those are great, but wow there is a lag when turning the page. I was thinking since reading PDFs is all it does it would be snappy but it feels like dial up speeds when turning to the next page, and our PDFs only have 3 or 4 pages, I do hope Sony works on the lag. If it were not for the lag I would give it five stars, or if it were only $200 I could understand the lag.... Another thing that would be nice is the...
I read a large amount of research papers and usually carry around a few notebooks for planning / ideas / notes. Given the volume of reading I do, LCD screens were causing a massive strain on my eyes, and it was annoying to lug around large tomes with me. I needed something capable of PDF render, with a large screen. The Sony Digital Paper system is the only solution available, and while expensive, does a solid job in replacing notebooks and books for me. My entire library fits into the paper system, I arrange files into folders, take notes, highlight, read, etc. This is not the highest quality hardware I've ever used, and the software is minimalist (but functional), but overall I am happy with this purchase and highly recommend it.
