Additional Information

Before Star Trek, there was Space Patrol. Science fiction television has its roots in this live, action-packed series that captured the imagination of Americans from 1950 to 1955, when space travel was just a dream. This book explores the freewheeling spirit of live TV, where anything could go wrong before millions of viewers--and often did. It spotlights (often in personal interviews) the risk-taking Space Patrol cast and crew who laid vital groundwork for television today. Included are episode logs for both television and radio shows as well as a complete guide to Space Patrol memorabilia.

This show aired *just* before my time, but I watched a lot of the similar stuff that followed it. Much of it was either recorded or else was presented as "part" of another local kids' show. A bit later on, the Gerry Anderson stuff appeared on our local TV; but most of this was on the same kind of theme. What really made me interested enough to buy this book was tat I had been a Star Trek fan and read a couple of books on the making of that series, which went into many details of the travails of what really goes into a production day-to-day, and all the challenges they had to get an episode out. As I hoped, this book was on the same lines, but explaining how this granddaddy of sci-fi TV shows faced issues many of which were unique to live presentation. After reading this book, with the commentary, made years later, of some of the people who produced the show, I was wishing we still had genuine live TV as a normal routine. With all today's technology, a production... Read more
Sp-a-a-ce Patrol! This is the book that describes all the underpinnings of the radio and television series (all using
the same actors) that was loved by millions. Bassior went to great pains to interview almost everybody involved int
this series, some just before they passed away like Bela Kovacs, who played Prince Baccaratti, the recurring bad guy
of she show who started out as a producer. He also gives full treatment to the "babes" of the show, Carole Carlise
and the bad-girl turned good girl, Tonga, the main reasons why adults were listening and viewing what was basically
a kiddy program. (Carol was the girl-next-door blonde, and Tonga was the brunette you wished was next door on the other side.) Written with love and good humor, this is the book that is indispensable for any fan of "SP-A-A-CE
P-A-TROL!" The best part of this book is where Lyn Osborn, who plays Cadet Happy, deliberately stares google-eyed
at a stagehand who had... Read more
I have fond memories of watching Space Patrol with my dad. It was one of the few things my busy dad had time to do with his family of seven children. He was as enchanted as we were by the captivating characters and stories. I actually had forgotten how enormously entertaining it was to watch the cohesive band of space travelers show us what true friendship, team spirit, responsibility and respect were all about. Space Patrol opened our imagination and set a standard that is sorely missed today

Thank you Jean-Noel Bassior! Your book has touched my heart with this wonderful, refreshing look at a bygone era.
