Additional Information

Edward I of England and Philip IV of France are at war. Philip, by devious means, has managed to seize control of the English duchy of Aquitaine in France, and is now determined to crush Edward. King Edward suspects that his enemy is being aided by a spy in the English court and commissions his chancery clerk, Hugh Corbett, to trace and, if possible, destroy the traitor. Corbett's mission brings him into danger on both land and at sea, and takes him to Paris, and its dangerous underworld, and then to hostile Wales. Unwillingly he is drawn into the murky undercurrents of international politics in the last decade of the thirteenth century.

Corbett rides again! The short arc is the mystery of a spy privy to high English councils, and it is clever AND historically apt. The long arc introduces a new love interest for Hugh -- at a notable cost, though -- the servant Ranulf experienced very little development in this book. Fortunately, this was planned as a long series, so perhaps "engaging and useful Ranulf learning and growing and providing occasional comic relief" will figure in a subsequent volume. Length limit? He did at least two useful things, but the overall impression was that Ranulf was much less interesting or engaging and much less integral than in the previous work. Difficult to write a series and keep tending each character, like gardening. Long may Doherty's Corbett garden grow!
This product arrived within the expected time frame, and it was in the described condition. The main reason for this rating was the price it was very expensive in comparison to other Paul Doherty books that I have purchased on line from overseas countries. In its faviour was the fact that it was one of the more reasonable priced copies of this book that was available.
I read the first two Corbett mysteries without much thinking about them. The puzzles were intriguing and the ambiance was well developed. I read lite medieval mysteries at bedtime or to pass a Sunday afternoon and don't have high literary expectations. After the second one, I realized that I still had no idea what kind of man Hugh Corbett was -- but I didn't care much because I got the escapism I needed.

But in this third installment, I am still left with an unfleshed character, I'm getting tired of "scuttling clouds", and the punctuation -- or chaos thereof -- is driving me out of my mind. A comma here, a semi-colon there -- heck, even a colon for variety. It's as if he wrote the whole book without any punctuation at all and then went back and just threw it in at random. We're not just talking those run-on sentences that our eighth-grade English teachers preached so passionately against. We're talking running-around-in-circles sentences that simply don't make any...
