Additional Information

You've heard the old saying, "You can't fit a square peg in a round hole." You can try to manipulate or force the peg, but really the only way you can make it fit into the round hole is by shaving some of the sides off. But once you do that, you can change the peg. In the same way, if we adopt the tenets of fundamentalism, we'll inherently change our Wesleyan faith- we'll end up with something different. In Square Peg, well-respected educators, pastors, and ministry leaders demonstrate the distinct differences between Wesleyan theology and fundamentalism. Through historical, biblical, scientific, and theological exposition, you'll explore the history of fundamentalism and its impact on denominations in the Wesleyan tradition, the differences in their views on Scripture, and the relationship between modern science and the Christian faith, and much more. In order to help Wesleyan churches remain true to their theology and identity, it's important to understand how our tradition will never be able to fit into a fundamentalist framework.

The content in this book is worth the read - especially if the reader is a fundamentalist who attends a Wesleyan church. I am a pastor in a Wesleyan denomination, and this book has helped me to better understand the frustrations of some of our parishioners who I now know are classical fundamentalists.
Wesleyans are not fundamentalists. This does not mean that we must wage war against all fundamentalists; however, it does mean that fundamentalists that are part of a Wesleyan congregation will often be confused and frustrated by our approach to Scripture and science (among other things).
This book is written by several scholars- mostly from within the Church of the Nazarene. Some chapters are well written and easy to follow, others... Not as much. The conclusion chapter does a great job of summarizing the incompatibilities of Wesleyanism and Fundamentalism while resisting the temptation to bash or disrespect either.
The book attempts to show and establish how Wesleyans read the Scriptures. Although there are a number of chapters that address the creation/evolution debate that links to Genesis 1, there is one chapter in the book that acknowledges that people come to reading and interpreting the Bible based on their own background. Thus, although the book tries to present a "Wesleyan" view of reading Scripture that resonates with an American view of the world, it is not as simple as the various writers attempt to make it. Having said that, I would recommend this book for thought and reflection.
5 stars The author brought out theology in a way that is amazing and well documented. Now a Primetimer, I have been studying God's word since my youth, and have had my viewpoint wonderfully challenged. Even as a layman, I would highly recommend this book as "required reading" for every Nazarene pastor (or other Wesleyan theology) or serious lay leadership. It is great to be able to look inside yourself by the power of the Holy Spirit and be led into other ways to be brought to a closer walk with Jesus Christ. The reader may not fully agree with all viewpoints, but we aren't REQUIRED to do so in order to be genuine Christians!
