Additional Information

Nestled amidst California's High Sierra peaks, two valleys have captured the imaginations of skiers and mountain explorers year after year. In this account, local author and longtime skier Eddy Starr Ancinas shares the histories of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows as they've never been told before, including the stories of John Reily, Wayne Poulsen and Alex Cushing, the visionaries whose dreams and determination forever transformed North Lake Tahoe. Squaw made a name for itself on the world stage thanks to its surprise nomination as host of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, just one mountain apart, Alpine was built with the support of local skiers and Bay Area families. Today, a new chapter unfolds as the distinct philosophies behind Squaw and Alpine unite under common ownership.

Have enjoyed reading about the players and events that were involved in the discovery and development of Squaw and Alpine. Some I knew of, but a lot I did not. A little more focused on Alpine than Squaw, but there are still some interesting stories about Squaw's development. A quick read and worth it for the back stories.
My husband lived in Squaw Valley during some of this time and we know several of the people and their families in this book. Although much good happened because of the movers and shakers of the time, Alex Cushing was more interested in having control and power over everyone than what was in the region's best interest. Those who had the heart and love of the area didn't always have the power to fight against him. You always need people with the drive and resources, but I think things would have been better in the long run without his ego in the mix.
As anyone who spends time in Squaw and Alpine knows, there are huge differences in the culture of the two ski areas, and the people who ride at each. Eddy Ancinas does a good job of explaining some of the curious background that has led to situation we have today, but she really stops before the acquisition of both by the private equity KSL partners and does not predict where things will go.

It is fascinationg to learn of the founders, their dreams, visions, foibles and follies, and the background of people like Hans Ernst, Jimmy King, and Jimmy Mott without whose poorly compensated efforts, Squaw would probably have collapsed under the majestic supervision of King Alex, an entitled salesman of the first order

The book could use a little editing, has a few typos and seems to jump around in parts, but this does not pretend to be a literary masterpiece, rather it is an entertaining short read that explains who we got to where we are today.

Enjoy it!!
