I tried. Three positive reviews (wait, three reviews total) for a 2009 book should have been a warning...but the words were warm so i purchased. In retrospect, the reviews in summarized the "story" as much as reviewed the book. If I were looking for a good St. Patrick's Day read for young folks (I was/am) this leaves me wanting. No notion of St. Patrick (who is he after all... And did he come to Ireland to chase snarks?) nor of Ireland for that matter. Obliquely, an embrace of the legend of the snake drive...but young minds would be left after his "story" with more questions than delights. If vividly drawn snakes searching out dinner are your thing, this might work but all the lovely illustrations aside, the story is a now show. Yes, you could work to construct a moral about the courage and ingenuity of the little mice...but easier to slither on to a more Irish story about St..Patty's day...leprechauns and rainbows and shamrocks...and perhaps a little jig or two? Wait...the... Read more
Joyce Stengel's tale is a fun way to introduce young children to the story of St. Patrick ridding Ireland of the last snake. In this version of the legend, the three mice Ryan, Brian, and Tulla help St. Patrick banish the final snake. Stengel's lyrical prose and Herb Leonhard's magical illustrations will entertain both young and old readers! The author's note at the end explains the story of St. Patrick and the legend of his bells. This book makes a wonderful gift to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!
I love this story! I'm a reading tutor in an elementary school (k-5) and I read this to my students every St. Patrick's day. They love hearing the tale of the last snake being driven out Ireland by the three brave mice. The pictures that go along with the story are stunning.

One night while Tulla Mouse can't sleep, she leaves the nest where her two brothers Ryan and Bryan lay sound asleep. It is then that she hears very loud snoring and see a man asleep under a tree with a bell by his side. While Tulla is wondering if the man is the real St. Patrick who drove the snakes out of Ireland, she spots one sneaky snake!

The snake decides to stuff the bell with grass and steal it! Tulla runs to the nest to wake Ryan and Bryan to make a plan and get that bell back to St. Patrick! Like most brothers would do, they blame it on Tulla's "imagination". But, when she insists and they see for themselves, the three little mice spring into action on a mission to get the... Read more
