Yes "Extreme" is a good word for this tool, or you could use "Beast" (Stanley FatMax Extreme 25mm (10-817)). First let's get the physical specs corrected; at its extremes it is: 210mm L x 47.5mm W x 20mm H in size and weighs 335g (~8.25" & ~12oz). You have to see it to appreciate its size. I think if you need a really heavy duty cutter, and you like the idea of having a snap blade you'll be very happy with this model. I don't think the plastic slide knob is much of a concern for long term reliability, but only time will tell.
The thumb-screw to lock the blade is easy to operate and works very well. Definetly a requirement to keep the blade position solid if you are going to use it where a lot of force or a deep cut is required.
Having spare blades right inside the knife is great piece of mind, and could save a lot of time on a job. I was not able to test the automatic blade loading, but as long as there is a blade I'd be OK.
Check one of these out in person before ordering. It's huge.
Also deadly when loaded with the Olfa black 25mm blades. Those things are SHARP and if you use box cutters a lot you will be amazed at how easy this tool with those blades makes your job.
As a contractor, I have two of these knives. I'm always looking for one or asking one of my guys who took it to use. They "disappear" on occasion and I've had to purchase 5 or 6 of them because inevitably someone uses it and decides it's now theirs to keep. But I don't mind much. It's a great, well made, extremely useful knife and frankly not terribly expensive to replace. I've had so many versions of "utility knives" but this one is, by far, the best and most useful. Period. There are other manufacturers of the 25mm snap-off knife. And I've had them. Dewalt makes a version sold at Home Depot. Kobalt at Lowes makes a version. This Stanley used to be at Depot but they replaced it with the cheaper made Dewalt version. They just aren't as well made and solid like the Stanley Xtreme.
