Designed by Ned Steinberger, it features the patented U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo™ head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique direct-drive double ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability. While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning. Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients from slap-style playing. And like all Steinbergers, it's super comfortable and perfectly balanced.

my feelings about this are mixed... I was looking for steinberger for a long time. I consider that musical instruments should be more logical, more modern, player confort oriented, etc. So for me everything you can do with a design to improve it, should be done. Clasic fenders are nice, but can be improved. I tought about Steimberger in this way... I tought that steinberger had this filosophy in the bass design...
I can say that the headless design is very smart... but when you want to tune the strings the amount of force required will make the knob jump, so you loos accuracy, and should use the allen provided, which is boring to find in the cas...
The electronics are very good. I don't have any complaint with the sound. Purist should complain in the studio only. This bass sounds great for general use in any situation.
My bigger complaint is: heavy!, a light instrument should be part of this design philosophy.
Me,,, a long time pro player, owned every bass out there for the last 25 years.
I never liked the boxie look of the early Steinbergers but liked the look of the newer Synapse, took a shot and ordered one sight unseen, never played one either.
Bottom line,, LOVE my flat black 4 string Synapse, I string all my bass's B-E-A-D and the Synapse had no problem accepting the BEAD strings in place of the EADG strings,, Im using the Steinberger double ball 5 string set (I throw the G string in the garbage can).
This bass produces a large number of different tones, its super easy to play and I think it looks very cool.
One thing,, the strap button location on the backside of the bass sucks,,, I put my own strap button on the bottom of the bass body and that made a big difference for the better.
Other than having to change the strap button location I cant think of anything negitive to say about the Synapse.
