In 2014 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Soundgarden's massive album Superunknown which to date has sold 9 million albums worldwide and is certified five times platinum by the RIAA in the US. Both a critical and commercial success, in 1994 Superunknown debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and earned the band two Grammys® for the singles 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Spoonman' in 1995. As relevant today as they were in 1994, the multi-platinum-selling Soundgarden continues to be in the Top 10 most played artists on Active Rock radio and the band's top 4 most played radio songs - accumulating over 1 million in total airplay and 4 billion in total audience to date - are all from this very beloved album: 'Black Hole Sun', 'Fell on Black Days', 'Spoonman' and 'The Day I Tried To Live'. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked the album as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the 100 Greatest Albums of the Nineties.

A major label announces two surround titles within a couple weeks of each other, a first in a very long time in North America where the majors have given up on surround sound since around 2005/2006 when they withdrew from the Super Audio CD/DVD-Audio format war. Could this be the push some of us have been hoping for finally starting? Soundgarden and Bob Marley both getting brand new 5.1 mixes?
Well after 8 weeks of asking we finally got the details of this release a few days ago in terms of the technical specs, they did go back to the original analogue multitracks to create the 5.1 mix and they did go back to the original analogue stereo master to create the vinyl, although they archived it to 24/192 and then mastered in the digital domain. Adam Kasper who produced Down on the Upside and King Animal was going to do the 5.1 mix, he has no 5.1 credits to his name so that was a bit concerning but at least he was using the multitracks so we knew we could hope for a fully...
I adore Soundgarden and I believe this album to be a landmark achievement in songwriting, performance and production. I think this collection does a good job honoring the legacy of this LP but it's not without its faults. The book is very cool with some really nice insight into the recording and production of the album with some really stellar photography thrown into the mix too. The remastered album is to my ears a bit harsher sounding, louder and less dynamic than the original master but not to the point where it's grating. Nevermind's remaster by comparison is a much more obnoxious. The outtakes and demos present are really interesting and serve to really give some background into some songs that would become entirely different beasts when properly produced and mixed
My biggest complaint is with the DTS:X app. Besides being kind of bloated and inefficient (with audio drops here and there), the experience is pretty underwhelming. The app was one of the big reasons I...
This review is for the Super Deluxe MP3 version and specifically about the demos and extras. I have no opinion about the re-master as the original album sounds fantastic and there was no need for a re-master as is the case for most releases after 1990. The album itself of course is an all time classic and easily five star material. I have mixed feelings on the 5 disc version and the price which is very high. Out of curiosity that was killing me I finally broke down and bought the Super Deluxe Mp3 and I have to say I feel like at least half of the songs or more were not worth of releasing. There are about 4-5 gems including the Like Suicide acoustic version (my personal favorite) and great live versions of Fell On Black Days and Beyond The Wheel. Solid version of Jesus Christ Pose as well. Black Days III is also interesting and a bit hard and unpolished unlike the finished version. I guess my favorites are the live stuff but I can do without the 16 different versions of Spoonman. I...
