God's compassion and pardon are utterly shocking in their lavish abundance—that's a lesson God himself pounded into the epic life-story of one man who kept resisting in whatever way he could. Surprised by Grace retells that man's true story—in a gripping presentation that will open readers' eyes wider than ever to God's relentless, purposeful, and inexhaustible grace.
The man's name isn't new to anyone. It's Jonah, the famous Old Testament prophet. This fresh unfolding of his story seeks to recapture the staggering effect it had on those who first encountered it so many centuries ago—the same shock effect that's desperately needed today among those who think they know God's heart far better than they really do.
In a powerful journey through unforgettable events and imagery, Surprised by Grace reveals how relentlessly God pursues rebels (a category that ultimately includes everyone), though he has every right and plenty of reasons to give up on us all.

The primary objective of Tullian Tchividjian is clear in his book, Surprised by Grace. His aim is to celebrate, delight in, and magnify of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Some readers might be caught by surprise in this little book that chronicles the story of Jonah but places the lion's share of attention on Christ. For this reason, Tchividjian's work should be applauded for rightly emphasizing the gospel in Jonah - the same way the gospel should be mined in every Old Testament book.
The author notes, "Only the gospel can truly save you. The gospel doesn't make bad people good; it makes dead people alive (emphasis mine). That's the difference between the gospel of Jesus Christ and every other world religion. All the others exhort their followers to save themselves by being good, by conforming their lives to whatever their worshiped deity is. But the gospel is God's acceptance of us based on what Christ has done, not on what we can do."
This book influenced me profoundly. I learned a lot from Tchividjian's subtle analysis of the book of Jonah. Though this book in the Bible is short (4 chapters), Tchividjian demonstrates that nothing in God's Word is superfluous. It gave me hope for loved ones I pray for to see how far God will go to pursue his own prophet AND challenged me to ask how I'm running in any way from God's purpose for me. In our flesh we are all rebellious to some degree; thank God for his grace, as shown through his patience and love for Jonah. The incorporation of different artistic portrayals of Jonah was fascinating. I highly recommend this intriguing book!!
I love reading about rebels since I am one. I think most of us can relate to the story of Jonah...I can recall several times where I have resisted and ran away, been pursued by God (which is usually not very fun if you're running away) and then came back kicking my feet doing the bare minimum and still pouted about doing what was asked...perhaps I even pointed a few fingers. And the pursuit from God that is not very fun; at some point, I always become so overwhelmed with the love I feel from God - that he loves me so much to intervene...to stop me from taking it too far. As Tullian Tchividjian (Yes I had to look at the name 9 times as I typed it) says on page 18 - "God is in the business of relentlessly pursuing rebels like us and that he comes after us not to angrily strip away our freedom, but to affectionately strip away our slavery so we might become truly free." I'm worth God's pursuit. It gets me every time.
Being a strong-willed person my whole life, I've had to...
