A handy Japanese phrasebook and guide to the Japanese language, Survival Japanese contains basic vocabulary necessary for getting around.
This book contains all the necessary words and phrases for speaking Japanese in any kind of setting. Perfect for students, tourists, or business people learning Japanese or travelling to Japan, it also contains a beginner guide to the Japanese language, allowing for a deeper understanding of Japanese than a typical Japanese phrasebook or Japanese dictionary. The book is broken into two basic sections: Common Japanese Expressions and Key Words, and Japanese Pronunciation Guides for Key Japanese Names and Signs. All Japanese words and phrases are written in Romanized form as well phonetically, making pronouncing Japanese a breeze. For example, the word for hotel, hoteru is also written as hoe-tay-rue. Authentic Japanese script (Kanji and Kana) is also included so that in the case of difficulties the book can be shown to the person the user is trying to communicate with.

This book is well organized and carries useful pharses that are commonly used. Go over the entire book a few times and you will quickly learn lines like "when does the post office open?", "please take me to hotel so and so", or "do you carry other colors?".
One problem is (not necessarily with the book) that you'd now ask questions in Japanese but you might not understand the responses. Well, the book shows how to say "could you write it down for me?" so hopefully you'll recognize some keywords and numbers. :-)
Note: You should know that it's a phrase book for practical use, so you won't find these things: - Any Chinese letters (Kanji) - Grammar - What each word means (note, some important words are explained, though).
For example: There is 'hontoni tanoshikatta desu' ("I really enjoyed it") but there's no explanation for the word 'tanoshii' or it is in the past tense.
I can see this book being helpful as an intro to Japanese. I don't know if I'd use it as a on-the-spot phrase book, I guess I'll see in a few weeks. I got the digital version figuring it would be easier to search for needed phrases. That idea might still pan out but the format of the text is so out of whack on a tablet!! I'd barely consider it a readable text. I think I'm better off with a Japanese phrase app. --DO NOT GET THE DIGITAL VERSION--
Pretty good for intro to useful words = like most quickie language books, you have to read through chapters organized by topic, rather than provided a quick list of essential words.
