Tibby wakes to find himself back on the NEW ORLEANS in the medical section after the intense battle at Goo'Waddle comes to a tragic end.Â He's told that he suffered extensive injuries in a crash and that his recovery will be slow.Â He's lost one eye; and though a new one can be cloned, it will take time for the tissue to grow before it can be implanted.Â Kalana is at his side, but she's still angry with him for his senseless reaction to the death of Tanden.Â Tibby suffers emotionally from all that has happened and is torn between his grief over the events at Goo'Waddle and his elation over the news that he and Kala are going to have a child.

Tibby is barely back on his feet when he learns that Earth has been struck by a large asteroid.Â He rushes to his home planet in hopes of providing assistance, only to discover that all life above microbial level has been destroyed.Â Tibby is crushed.Â

As he's about to return to Federation space, the NEW ORLEANS receives a signal from an international Earth colony on Mars.Â The colony is struggling, as their supplies have severely diminished and they are no longer able to sustain themselves, now that Earth has been destroyed.Â As the crew of the NEW ORLEANS rescues the colony, they detect signals from a second colony, a Chinese team, located on the Earth's moon.

Tibby also learns that a huge war between the Chinese and many of the western nations had been taking place before the asteroid impact.Â The NEW ORLEANS cautiously responds to rescue the Chinese colonists and soon learns that the few surviving scientists and occupants have been living under the rule of a ruthless and maniacal general named Ming, who has declared himself Emperor of the Moon.

After the rescue operations are completed, Tibby learns from the lunar and Martian colonists that the asteroid impact was not an accident; rather it had been deliberately guided to strike the Earth.Â It also appears that those responsible for the destruction have been returning periodically to prepare the planet for their own colonization.Â

Before the NEW ORLEANS returns to Federation territories, Tibby and his crew are able to witness one of the enemy ship entering Earth's orbit.Â They're shocked to recognize the spacecraft as an identical match to the Tottalax ships that have been assisting the Brotherhood in their assaults on the Federation.
