Additional Information

This series covers the tactical themes and typical traps in ALL main line openings, which are explained in carefully selected and annotated short games. Tactics in the Chess Opening teaches how to recognise opportunities to attack early in the game and how to avoid standard pitfalls in the opening. It will make the adventurous player win more games, and is a guide for further study and for setting up an opening repertoire.

Contrary to the negative review, this book is excellent. It is not a book that teaches gambits nor does it advertise itself as a book to teach how to play gambits. It is a book with a set of annotated games featuring tactical, attacking chess within a specific set of openings (flank openings and gambits). Studying annotated games is a good way to learn chess and this is a good collection (along with all the the other reasonably priced ebooks in the series). Again, this book is not designed to teach you how to play gambits. It is designed to analyze and show you tactical, attacking games in the flank openings and in gambit lines like the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. If you want to learn theory on things like the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit then look for Rev. Tim Sawyer's BDG keybook I or II (if you can find them) ... and IM Christoph Sheerer's book on the BDG which is relatively new (2011).

This entire book series is well worth it. Great value. Snag it. I did.
I thought this book was a rip-off, a dishonest bait-and-switch. The title and blurb led me to think I was going get a systematic treatment of tactical tricks in these openings. But no, it's just a collection of annotated games, and a poor one at that. Think you'll learn some insider tips on the Orangutan, for instance? No--ain't there. I'll never buy a book from this publisher again.
