Additional Information

TADEUS REICHSTEIN. Printed Note signed: "With many thanks/yours/T. Reichstein", 1p, 5¾x4. Basel, Switzerland, 1950 November 1. Imprinted with his name and the address of the Organic Chemistry Department at the University of Basel at upper left margin. In German, not translated. Reichstein mentions receiving the Nobel Prize and the numerous congratulations and letters he has received. Although he would like to personally answer such correspondence personally, his other tasks and obligations make it impossible to do so, and sends this card in response. Polish-born Tadeus Reichstein (1897-1996) of Switzerland's Basel University and the Mayo Clinic's Edward Calvin Kendall and Philip Showalter Hench won the 1950 Nobel Prize in Medicine "for their discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects." Reichstein had first isolated and explained the constitution of aldosterone, a hormone of the adrenal cortex. His collaboration with Kendall and Hench led to the isolation of cortisone and the discovery of its therapeutic value in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Lightly soiled. Light photo corner stains at corners, pinhead-size stain at one word of typed text. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Overall, fine condition. - Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. DOCUMENT 159647
