Well, I found out. Like with all things, you get what you pay for. And what I got for $20 was a $20 pair of binos. I'm VERY glad I didn't pay the "everyday" price for these or I'd have been pretty upset.
As others have reported, the eye pieces are loose. Not that there's a screw loose, or they're not fully seated as a manufacturing defect, but rather this is a DESIGN defect. They are attached as they were designed, but the eyepieces (including the entire lens assembly) is loose. As a result, they will not hold the right eyepiece focus. You have to adjust this EVERY time you pick them up because they are so loose the eyepiece moves readily just from handling.
Also, the field of focus is quite long. The CLOSEST object I can focus on is 40 feet. Not bad if you're scouting for moose in the Klondike, but not very useful if you're watching hummingbirds in the back yard.
Lens caps are also quite loose. This bino does not come with a case, only a neck...
I remeber as a child having a 50mm tasco telescope and truth be told i loved that thing. It was on a alt/az wooden mount and the optics were great for what it cost back in the 90s. I also remeber having Tasco 8x21 folding roof prism binoculars when i was a kid. I use to take them everywhere with me and they too where surprisingly good litte binos. I remeber going to my first Alabama football game in 2001 and using those little binoulars. Felt like i was on the field with thoose binos and the image was crisp and clear. Fast forward to 2013 and it has now become clear that Tasco is not what it was 15 years ago. I have an old pair of telstar precision optics 7x50 binoculars that have now finally worn out after 50 years. So needing a new pair i thought why not go back to that company that spawned so many good child hood memories. I bought these for mainly astronomy and casual bird watching. I even got a tripod adaptor for use with my telescope tripod. I recieved my order promptly but was...
The quality of these is great. I got a cheap pair just to have them around and wasn't expecting anything special. The binoculars come with a canvas holder and protective covers for the 4 glass lenses (front and back).
I tried them out immediately after they arrived and they felt very good. I had gone on a safari a couple of years ago and the high end binoculars we got for it($250) were at a family camp. I brought these with me there to compare. The $250 pair were better, but not by much. Looking across the lake through a inlet to another lake (maybe 1.2 miles in total distance) I could make out a blue square area with these binoculars. With the $250 pair, I could tell it was a chair. This chair was up in the woods. Looking at the dock for the same house 1.2miles away, I couldn't notice much of a difference at all. These binoculars are very good where there is light.
If you pay more for a pair of binoculars you'll get a few features. If you're going to...
