Additional Information

Most general histories of technology are Eurocentrist, focusing on a main line of Western technology that stretches from the Greeks is through the computer. In this very different book, Arnold Pacey takes a global view, placing the development of technology squarely in a "world civilization." He portrays the process as a complex dialectic by which inventions borrowed from one culture are adopted to suit another.

Arnold Pacey's "Technology in World Civilization" looks at thousands of years of technological progress, and makes two important and intuitive claims. First, technology has arisen due to the circumstances and needs of the culture, and second, imported technology is only useful and effectively if properly adopted to local circumstances and needs.

This book is very good for a broad overview of technology in human history.
Interesting read. Took every effort to minimize Western technological achievements. Almost nothing on Greek and Roman engineering, architecture and science. Any Western discovery was immediately followed by making a comparison to a similar, slightly later Muslim or Chinese achievement.
This was a required read for my course but it was very informational and was a nice short read. There is pictures which makes it that much better. It does not get wordy nor does it ever loose my interest.
