Telesteps has changed something in their manufacturing process over the years. In the good old days, they had 2 pins that you simultaneously pull below the 2nd rung to collapse the ladder. These days they have 2 'buttons' that you push toward each other to collapse it. I thought that that was the only thing they had changed, but apparently, they've changed other things as well - because while my 1st telesteps lasted 9 years, my last 5 (all 1800 EP's) have lasted 9 months. I use the ladder 15-20 times a week for work inspections. I weigh 160 lbs (so that's not the issue). I've been using their ladders for years (mostly the first one that I bought in the early 2000s - which was a 12') When that one finally died after almost a decade, I decided to 'upgrade' to the 1800 EP (14.5'), which I was fairly certain would last me another 10 yrs - but it was closer to 10 days. Within 2 months of regular use, each has failed in the same way - one of the posts between 2 rungs comes loose and falls...
I purchased this ladder for its height and load capacity. I've been using a 12 articulating Werner ladder for the longest but wanted to upgrade to a ladder more user friendly. The 1800 Telesteps is very eye pleasing and easy to use. It extends to its full height within seconds and collapses easily. The only problem here you have to be careful while climbing onto a roof within rain gutters or flashing as it slides pretty easy due to the smooth aluminum finish but your weight keeps it stable. As far as climbing to the top of the ladder while fully extended I'll never due that, I'm 230 and I have no desire to climb a roof too high or too steep however I'm in Los Angeles, CA where most homes are single story or two story so I don't have a serious problem when it comes to height. keep in mind some attic spaces are difficult to access since this ladder needs a wall or some sort of edge to lean on this forces me to keep my old ladder in the truck so there are set backs. I give it 4 stars.
I just received this ladder and carefully examined it, extending it fully to test it. Here's my initial impression.
Not all telescoping ladders are equal. This is the third one I own and it is definitely the most robust. The OSHA compliant Type IA rating certainly makes this ladder a different kind of beast. It shows it's designed for daily, commercial use. The tubes move smoothly as they telescope. The steps are significantly wider than those on other models that are engineered for consumer use, the tubular telescoping posts are a larger diameter, and the locking mechanism is entirely different from the others. There is but one release on the bottom of the second step that controls all the steps, not one on each step like some other telescoping ladders. What is unique to this design is an indicator on each step that goes from red to green when the step is engaged and locked in, providing added confidence that the ladder is ready for use. I look forward to using this...
