German bandleader Bert Kaempfert (1923-1980) was one of the most successful conductors, arrangers, and recording artists in the orchestral pop music field. Also a major producer, he played a key role in the roots of the British beat boom of the early '60s. As musical director for Polydor, he produced the first Beatles recordings as backing musicians for Tony Sheridan, and wrote ''Wooden Heart'' (#1 in the pop charts) for Elvis Presley s movie G.I. Blues. He also penned songs made famous by other artists, such as ''Strangers in the Night'' for Frank Sinatra, ''Spanish Eyes'' for Al Martino, ''Danke Schön'' for Wayne Newton, ''L-O-V-E,'' for Nat King Cole, and ''A Swingin' Safari'' (the theme song of the American TV show The Match Game). Kaempfert also had his own hit recording career. His signature work, ''Wonderland by Night,'' skyrocketed to #1 in the U.S. pop charts in 1960. His best-selling albums include: The Magic Music of Far Away Places, Blue Midnight, Three O clock in the Morning, Strangers in the Night, and That Happy Feeling.
