Additional Information

Our planet is approaching a critical environmental juncture. Across the globe we continue to deplete the five pools of carbon – soil, wood, coal, oil, and natural gas – at an unsustainable rate. We’ve burned up half the planet’s known reserves of oil – one trillion barrels – in less than a century. When these sources of energy-rich carbon go into severe decline, as they surely will, society will follow.

Former archeologist and Sierra Club activist Courtney White calls this moment the Age of Consequences—a time when the worrying consequences of our environmental actions– or inaction – have begun to raise unavoidable and difficult questions. How should we respond? What are effective (and realistic) solutions?

In exploring these questions, White draws on his formidable experience as an environmentalist and activist as well as his experience as a father to two children living through this vital moment in time. As a result, The Age of Consequences is a book of ideas and action, but it is also a chronicle of personal experience. Readers follow White as he travels the country --- from Kansas to Los Angeles, New York City, Italy, France, Yellowstone, and New England.

Courtney White effectively challenges the false dichotomy in which citizens must choose between protecting the environment or creating jobs. In so doing, he is the latest in a line of thinkers who point out that there are other more productive ways to approach conservation. White eloquently calls for a new path in which open space protection, working landscapes, and diversified business enterprises on private lands coexist through cooperation among partners formerly at odds with each other. The author has the authority to advocate for this approach because he has lived it out through the innovate nonprofit he co-founded in 1997, the Quivira Coalition. Thank you Mr. White for showing readers a way forward at a critical time for action.
The most important issue facing homo sapiens in our 100,000 year evolution is global warming and climate catastrophe. Read this book and see how the solution to climate change lies right under our feet and at the end of our forks and knives. Must reading for food and climate activists. Ronnie Cummins, Director, Organic Consumers Association.
The title of this book is a bit confusing as it is taken from a quote by Winston Churchill which was memorably used by Al Gore in An Inconvenient Truth, and has thus become associated with the issue of climate change. Courtney White's book is only indirectly concerned with the climate problem, though he does offer his version of the idea of carbon capture by use of landscape management.

This book's strength is in the authors writing skill. He can effortlessly lead a reader from personal reveries and family memories into the deeper currents of regret and anger at the shape of the world his children will be living in. Still, he doesn't let this darkness blur his vision of what is possible in returning life to even badly degraded ecosystems. He is well experienced with the most difficult work of building trust and agreement between hardened adversaries, and has scars to prove it. What makes his stories compelling is the success he has had by stubbornly looking for truth and... Read more
