When you think things can't get worse in the bathroom. Felix is at the park but the day couldn't get worse. He's lactose intolerant and just ate an ice cream bar. And, by the way, it's earthquake season.

The Aquarium by Susan Wingate is not for those of a queasy disposition, dealing as it does with the consequences of Felix's graphically-described diarrhea attack. However, the writing of this tale of toilet tribulation is vivid and gripping as it progresses rapidly into a nightmare scenario for Felix. First, an earthquake shakes the toilet block where he is unluckily evacuating his bowels but not himself. Then a flood of seawater threatens to engulf the building with Felix trapped inside it.
Desperate as a guy caught between a rising elevator and a concrete ceiling, only a lot wetter and stinkier, Felix must somehow extricate himself as the water rises or face certain death by drowning in filthy liquid.
Will Felix make it, and what about the other person pounding on the outside of the bathroom door? If you can stomach the sewerlike setting, this suspenseful tale will ensnare you in its coils. Only don't go eating too many ice cream cones.
I didn't know what to expect from this short story by Susan Wingate, but since I'm a huge fan of her writing (i.e., "Bobby's Diner" and "Spider Brains"), I knew I probably wouldn't be disappointed - and I wasn't.
This is not a tale for the queasy or frail of stomach. But if you enjoy visceral horror with a bit of toilet humor thrown in, go for it. Fun, gooey, yucky chills in Susan's quirky style!
A little bathroom humor never hurt anyone. "The Aquarium" starts out funny, then turns serious, and then ends with a strangeness that I found rewarding. This story is not what you think it is going to be. Great fun.
