Art of the French Horn

The highly influential British virtuoso French horn player Dennis Brain was largely responsible for popularizing the French horn as a solo classical instrument. His very promising career was cut short when he was killed driving home to London after a performance with conductor Eugene Ormandy in Edinburgh at the age of 36 in 1957. Presented here are four intimate recordings from 1956, performing Brahms, Mozart and Marais. The Brahms recordings are performed as a trio with Max Salpeter (violin) and Cyril Preedy (piano). The Mozart piece is performed with a string quartet consisting of Mary Carter (violin); Anatole Mines (viola); Eilenn McCarthy (cello) and Eileen Gainger (viola). On the Marais piece Brain is accompanied by Wilfred Parry on piano. All selections have been newly remastered.
