I think this book was cute and for VERY young children it would probably be perfect. There isn't a lot of substance to the story and I think it could have been greatly improved if there was more of a story to follow. The pictures were cute and might keep a young child entertained for a brief few minutes. I still have to give it four stars because the author made the pictures match the story. Great for little ones who simply like to look at the pictures but my older children expected more.
I wasn't too impressed with this one. The story is very, very simple and pretty flat (I would not agree with the word "plot" used by another reviewer), and all of the bees look weird. In fact, they all have the same face, except for the Queen bee. I know bees are supposed to be little drones, but since they have personified the bees by giving them faces, it would be nice if they didn't all look exactly the same. The main character in this book has a group of friends, but they all look exactly the same.
In this book, one bee is in a wheelchair. He feels outcast and unable to contribute to the bee society. One day, the hive is threatened and this special little bee saves the day, which leads him to realize he is worth quite a lot more than he realized.
I used to avoid reading this book to my daughter because I thought it was lame. The overall message is nice, but the execution wasn't done very well. She (4-5 years old) also doesn't really ever request this...
This little book caught my eye with its attractive cover. It is a book geared towards young readers: the bee in this story has a disability making his life different from the other bees. However despite his disability he earns the respect and friendship of the other bees. The story is simple and straight forward - making it a great read for young children. In recent studies I became aware that only female bees sting. I was concerned about the bee not dying after stinging the bear in this story but putting that aside; I loved this story.
