Additional Information

Renowned for its pristine beaches and celebrity inhabitants, Martha’s Vineyard is one of the most exclusive destinations in America. But each September, after the tourists clear out, thousands of fishermen take back the beaches to compete in the Vineyard’s annual fishing derby, a monthlong contest that pits plumbers against investment bankers, schoolkids against senior citizens, and natives against newcomers in a round-the-clock hunt for a great fish. Island immortality is at stake, and history has proven that anyone can win it: teenage girls, dozing fishermen, complete amateurs. In The Big One, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist David Kinney takes readers behind the scenes at the derby to chronicle thirty-five days of fish-addled hope and heartbreak. He captures all the action and introduces us to an eccentric gallery of characters that includes: Dick Hathaway, the crotchety legend who once caught a bluefish from a helicopter; Janet Messineo, a recovering alcoholic who says that striped bass saved her life; and Lev Wlodyka, a cagey local whose next fish will spark a storm of controversy and throw the tournament into turmoil. The Big One is a hugely entertaining story of passion and obsession that does for fishing what Friday Night Lights did for football.

I really enjoy fishing, but I'm usually somewhat reluctant about 'fishing books.' In many cases, it seems difficult to capture the feelings of being out on the water with a rod in-hand, the combination of intensity and relaxation, the maddening desire to spend every waking moment on the surf, in the jetty, or on a boat. In 'The Big One,' David Kinney does a phenomenal job of telling the parallel stories of one man's quest for a prize striper along with the overall narrative of the Derby in 2007. While fishing plays a major role in this book, it doesn't strike me as a book about fishing. It's a book about the men, women, and children who compete in this tournament as well as the tournament's impacts, both social and economic, on Martha's Vineyard. The stories of the current participants as well as some of the historic asides are consistently interesting and an equal mix of fascinating and humorous at times.

Overall, this is a fantastic book and a real page-turner. The... Read more
The Big One is a fantastically written and exhaustive account of the annual Martha's Vineyard fishing derby. David Kinney, who participates in the derby himself, manages to ingratiate himself into an insular crowd of native island fishermen. Their secrets, and stories, are not easy to come by. Kinney manages to capture the passion and insanity that drives the fishermen to fish all hours of the day and night, sometimes with little or no sleep for days. He details the fishing frenzy that drives the tournament, and the personal accounts of the fishermen and the island's residents, to whom the derby is their lifeblood.
The tournament is not without controversy when one of the derby's most successful anglers catches a striped bass with lead weights found in it's gut. The weights got there as a result of a controversial fishing technique called yo-yoing. It takes two meetings of the fishing committee, sandwiched by an uproar of support for the angler, for the committee to come to a... Read more
As an annual visitor to Martha's Vineyard I passed by this book in the Island bookstores this summer. There is a lot to do on MV and fishing isn't at the top of my list. I the fall I read a review of the book in The Cape Cod Times which motivated me to purchase the book on (I discovered my purchase price of a hard cover is about the same price the paperback will fetch in April.

The novel describes a world of Martha's Vineyard that the summer visitor never sees. Their annual fishing tournament is extremely well organized with hundreds of prizes for various catagories of fishermen. There are grand prize winners of a $30,000 truck and a $30,000 boat. They also hae daily prizes.

Like the title of the book suggests some people become obsessed with winning. People pan their vacations around the derby. Many go days without sleep or they sleep on the beach waiting for the fish to hit. Forget about having a contractor do work during the'll... Read more
