The Blair Witch Project is more conceptual art and marketing phenomenon than movie. Directors Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick drew from canny filmmakers such as Val Lewton and Alfred Hitchcock: People are much more scared by what they don't see than by what they do see. The filmmakers made a virtue of having no budget for special effects and left everything to the audience's grisly imagination. Like some sort of cinematic Rorschach test, as we watch this movie, we are each scared by whatever lurks in our subconscious.
Teenagers have always loved scary movies. On one level, they provide peer bonding -- you have to be friends with someone you grabbed in a moment of terror, and it's fun to have that shared experience. On another level, there is something cathartic for teenagers about seeing this graphic representation of an uncontrollable id on the loose. It's important for parents to remember that tolerance for scariness is highly individual, and, especially for teens and...
I am a big fan of the woods since childhood summers and know the dangers of veering off trail. I was also an art student in college and get the "stay on project" premise. The group dynamic was very real. I am not a horror film person- more "realistic" suspense-ie Hitchcock, film noir etc. This film spoke to me as it felt very true as did their terror...the idea of being lost in the woods, no food etc-scary to the nines with or without a witch/murderer. I saw this originally on the big screen which amplified the feeling of nature all around. As a film on its own, I rate this a 4. As a horror film, a 5. It's a helluva ride
The Blair Witch Project is the first found-footage film to get a considerable amount of hype behind it, and is also the film that kick-started the found-footage genre we have today. Did the film live up to all the hype behind it? To many people it didn't live up to it. This film is one of the more polarizing films I've ever seen. In my opinion, the film did not live up to the hype, but I still thought it was a decent film. I thought it was great that they could do so much with a little budget and no special effects. I liked the characters save one and I felt their plight.
The story is as follows. Three college students, Heather, Michael, and Josh, are making a documentary on the Blair Witch Legend. They interview a few people who know the legend and some even claim to have seen the witch. Then they go into the woods to look for more evidence but end up getting lost. They soon learn that there is someone following them. Is it the Blair Witch or is it just a crazy...
