Discover a lost magic, long buried and forgotten...

Without a rune marking his role in society, Brock is doomed to a life below the lowest rung of the social ladder. Unwilling to accept his fate, the teen risks his life to obtain a fake rune that marks him as a member of the Empire's ruling class. He then embarks on a quest to join an institution where the Empire's future leaders are trained.

As a student of the Academy, he soon uncovers a chain of secrets kept hidden for centuries, secrets that expose cracks in the foundation of Empire society. Among his discoveries is a powerful magic, long buried and forgotten.

Brock's compassion and sense of justice are seeds that sprout tight friendships and a blossoming romance. An unwillingness to be bullied earns him a dangerous enemy, growing into a feud that escalates to a climactic showdown.

This book was a very positive surprise. I bought it somewhat reluctantly, not being a big fan of so called young-adult genre. The first few pages made me worried, too. Though, as I allowed myself to get immersed in the plot all my worries disappeared.

The concept behind the story is quite cliche, but then, are there themes that aren't so? The main character, a youth in his mid-teens is fighting against his fate, which is not that plain and simple as he was told to believe so. Together with his best friend he starts a journey to eventually discover himself.

Sounds like a typical young-adult, right? The execution, though, is splendid. By no means characters are one-dimensional. Even though, they still offer a lot of space for further development they are not irritating or boring. They are sketched skillfully and allow the reader to simply like them (or dislike in the case of black characters.

The story is quick and steady. There are not too many... Read more
This book was such a great read that it had to be reviewed while still fresh from reading it. The wait for book 2 is long enough to drive you batty because you can't just continue and yet close enough you are dying to get your hands on it.. Now how to write a review worthy of it without spoiling it by giving away too much.. So Just In Case I Goof {{***THERE MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD***}} This book takes the Harry Potter book suitable for tweens and teens and brings forth the story in the Young Adult reading frame. DO NOT MISTAKE ME it is NOT a Harry Potter, it's firmly a different universe but it has the same themes of Good vs Evil both in the overall outlook and the personal clash of characters. It has the academy feel and friendship bonds, and the underdog that sets out to better himself in a world that expects something else. Think Potter without the lightning bolt scar, but comes to earn the scar himself and the expectations that come with it. You boo the bad guys cheer the good laugh... Read more
The Buried Symbol offers a world where the citizens are split into two castes: the chosen and the unchosen. The chosen are those privileged to have a symbol on their foreheads to indicate the kind of special talents that the wearers possess. The unchosen, however, are the untalented masses deemed to be beneath the notice of the chosen class, and without legal rights and protections. The protagonist is an unchosen who became motivated, after a event life event, to obtain the rune, or a facsimile of such, and enroll in a special academy for the young chosen ones.

The most notable aspect of this book is how well developed the author made the protagonist--why the boy turned to thievery, his morals, his compassion, his motivations, and ultimately his belief in doing good for others. The book certainly has similarities to Harry Potter in that there is an academy for magic users and there is initially questions as to whether protagonist belongs there and the MC has to prove...
