The name’s Jake G. Panda, and I'm a wildlife investigator. I work in the protection business at a flophouse for endangered animals called the Last Resort. I'm the hotel snoop. The resident fuzz. I never go looking for trouble, but it always seems to find me.

This hilarious first installment of THE ENDANGERED FILES is a wild and woolly adventure mystery involving a missing guest, a green bird, and a bunch of double-crossing critters. It's designed to introduce young readers to the subject of endangered species in a fun and informative way.

I love the concept of this story – a hardboiled panda detective working to unravel crimes against endangered animals? Awesome! I also really liked the illustrations, which express the often mood of the novel so well. I read the book aloud to my nine-year-old daughter, beginning it one evening when she was very anxious about something and was having trouble calming down. Without any set up, I just started reading, and it immediately captivated her attention. But even though I enjoyed the story all the way through, she unfortunately lost interest. The movie script approach, though inventive and fun, ended up being limiting too. It was hard to get to know the characters and settings when there was so little description, especially for a child who has never seen a film noir movie. This was compounded by there being a relatively large number of characters that moved in and out of the plot rapidly. Had this been an actual movie, the visuals would have provided enough additional... Read more
There aren't a lot of hard boiled detective stories targeting children but this novel would make a great introduction to the genre. This is a fun story for kids and not just because it's filled with talking animals and lots of humor. The story is formatted almost like a screenplay and uses a lot of film style jargon like Fade In or Fade Out, Pan and Cut To, etc. The action is written in present tense which takes some getting used to but once you're used to it (and that will happen fairly quickly) you'll have an authentic movie-in-your head experience while reading this book. This is an entertaining way to be introduced to some basic scriptwriting and movie storytelling conventions which can make understanding movies easier and watching movies more enjoyable. This kind of novel format is a great way to get people f all ages owho enjoy watching movies to enjoy reading books too.
A page turner for sure! I think this book should be in every library in every elementary and middle school. AND on the coffee table of anyone who enjoys a good mystery, this book has it all! It's a great read to learn about conservation, from the animals point of view. It's creative, funny, and filled with suspense. And how can you go wrong with a having a panda bear on the case!
