Additional Information

As a religious institution consecrated by and literally acknowledging the Prince of Darkness, the Church of Satan enjoyed an inspiring, and occasionally either thrilling or terrifying, existence from 1966 to 1975. Beginning as a whimsical and satirical countercultural statement against the social and institutionally-religious hypocrisy of the 1960s, the Church gradually evolved into a positive, sincere, and [to its own surprise] virtuous organization, though not without periodic individual and group growing pains: the consequence of allegiance to a supernatural entity only dimly apprehended and understood by Western Judæo-Christianized civilization.

From its 1979 1st Edition to this 2013 8th, The Church of Satan remains the only complete documentary history of that fascinating and bizarre adventure, from Anton & Diane LaVey's founding of the Church in their San Francisco home to its surprising dissolution into a secular business a decade later and metaphysical supersession by the Temple of Set.

Ever since its 1981 2nd Edition, The Church of Satan's growing size made it impossible to print. This 8th Edition finally fits all of the text and plates into fewer than 500 pages: 285,300 words, 39 chapters, 73 color plates.

[A companion The Church of Satan II volume (imminently also available in this same format & distribution) contains all 161 Appendices in a similar-sized B&W book. Both volumes should be acquired and read together.]

The Church of Satan was a heady cultural phenomena of the sixties and seventies. It had a blend of the hedonism of the brightly-clad hippies, the smoking jacket sophistication of the Playboy philosophy and a non-nonsense approach to magical practice. It provided the blend that its founder Anton ., Lavey promised – nine parts respectability to one part outrage. The books associated with the movement – The satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals have had huge sales – creating a more comprehensive effect on the occult world than even the material of the Golden dawn. Many modern groups – including the Temple of Set, the current Church of Satan, Chaos Magicians and even Rune Gilders owe their sense of magical pragmatism to this group. This book is a unique study from LaVey’s second in command Michael Aquino. The book provides an open eye view to the evolution of a seminal magical organization during its first nine years of incarnation. It covers... Read more
I first read Anton LaVey’s Satanic Bible in 1982 and while I found the philosophy wonderfully engaging and liberating, I couldn’t help but wonder if there were actually people out there doing this stuff. Dr. Michael Aquino’s 2 volume set dispels all doubt and verifies that between 1966 and 1975 The Church of Satan was an active and vital organization with an extensive network of extremely interesting people. I was amazed to learn that unlike Satanists of the 80s who had to worry about 'Satanic Panic' media hype and public derision, Satanists of the 60s-70s were the social elite - embraced by Hollywood, appearing on the Tonight Show, invited back stage at concerts, and so on.

As a high-ranking member and editor of the Church’s newsletter ‘The Cloven Hoof’ throughout that time period, Dr Aquino was in a unique position and privy to much of the Church’s inner workings. The extensive documentation you will find in here – from... Read more
The most accurate and detailed account of the COS and its eventual end in 1975. Most "Satanists" of today should read this book and learn the difference between being an atheist and what it took, and meant, to be a "real" Satanist. It also details how and why that institution ended and evolved into the Temple of Set.(... and no, I'm not a member of the Temple, thats just what really happened.) I highly recommend all of the other works by Dr Aquino as well. A monumental work. very well done. My recommendation, as soon as you finish reading this book, read The Temple of Set, also by Dr Aquino.
