Additional Information

Before E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey and Sylvia Day's Bared to You, there was Anne Rice’s New York Times best seller The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty

In the traditional folktale of "Sleeping Beauty," the spell cast upon the lovely young princess and everyone in her castle can only be broken by the kiss of a Prince. It is an ancient story, one that originally emerged from and still deeply disturbs the mind's unconscious. In the first book of the trilogy, Anne Rice (author of Beauty's Kingdom), writing as A.N. Roquelaure, retells the Beauty story and probes the unspoken implications of this lush, suggestive tale by exploring its undeniable connection to sexual desire. Here the Prince awakens Beauty, not with a kiss, but with sexual initiation. His reward for ending the hundred years of enchantment is Beauty's complete and total enslavement to him . . . as Anne Rice explores the world of erotic yearning and fantasy in a classic that becomes, with her skillful pen, a compelling experience. Readers of Fifty Shades of Grey will indulge in Rice’s deft storytelling and imaginative eroticism, a sure-to-be classic for years to come.

Praise for The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty:

"Articulate, baroque, and fashionably pornographic." —Playboy

"Something very special . . . at once so light and yet so haunting." —The Advocate

I have so many comments about this book. Essentially the worst thing that happens is spanking. Lots of spankings.
It's very non-consensual in the beginning, Sleeping Beauty is woken against her will, which is the normal story. Sleeping Beauty traditionally has the rape of Beauty as it's centerpiece.
This is just a continuation of that theme.
But Beauty is awoken by a handsome prince, raped, and forced to parade naked in front of the populace.
She's taken to a BDSM castle where you see other naked royalty who've sworn fealty to this BDSM kingdom.
Some of the princesses/princes have a contract where they are only there for a set period of time, but others, like Beauty, are not given a contract and her stay is believed to be indefinite.
Probably the most ridiculous part is the focus on buttoxes and that the most "humiliating" part was twerking in front of a crowd.
If you're into spanking, you may enjoy this.
If you're not, like I am, this... Read more
I am a big Anne Rice fan, Ive read all the chronicals and new tales of tbe vampires and decided to try some of her erotica books. I very much enjoyed the Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, though to be honest it was the first erotica novel ive ever read in my life. Ive always been a fan of her style of wirting and I have to say to the people who think this book is like 50 shades of grey you will be disappointed to know that there is no love story in this book, thats not really Anne Rices style. Thats why I feel like the people who gave it only one star are so disappointed, because there is no loving romance, Anne Rice has never been that kind of writer. Sure in some of her books there are bits of romance but if you want something with a happy ending this isnt for you. Ifyou do decide to purchase the book please read the preface, Rice herself has even said," the books arent anout literal cruelty; they are about surrender." And thats why I feel like the series works. Like I said its... Read more
Were do I start?? As other have said this book is not for everyone. For anyone thinking of reading this book, I suggest reading at least half the reviews so you know what to expect. I think a lot of the negative reviews come from the shock. I was fully prepared when I started reading this book.

For those referying this to Fifty Shades of Grey...DONT. Fifty Shades of Grey had to do with Submission. The Claiming of Beauty is about slavery. Two very different lifestyles. I have a lot of friends who live both lifetyles so I am familiar with both. My issues with this book is that I feel that a woman has a choice to make the decesion to become either a submissive or a slave. It's a consciounce choice and a natural desire to want and need to please his or her master. Once that decesion has been made, the training/transformation can then begin...with conscent of both parties involved. Beauty had no choice. She was raped while still being "asleep" and then forced out of... Read more
