When Jess Carpenter inherits her grandmother's summer cottage, Journey's End, on Michigan's Pine Lake she embarks on a journey that reveals and unravels her families past. Interestingly told by the voices of 2 generations: Miss Mamie, her grandmother whose actions and secrets have determined the course of Jess's life, and Jess whose buried past bubbles to the surface when she returns to the cottage where she spent her childhood summers.
I read this mystery romance on Kindle and this early edition had some formatting issues, but nothing that detracted from the story. Great book for winter doldrums when you want to get away and your vacation is months away. There is a little bit of sexuality, and some adult circumstances that fit the nature of the story. The ending was nicely done and had some surprises that I didn't guess, all in all enjoyable.
When my Aunt Margaret passed away, I spent days going through boxes of letters, diaries and memorabilia. It actually made me feel like I had never known her. That’s the premise of this book, and I really related to it. You almost feel like you are doing something bad – snooping…but SO interesting to have this kind of insight to another time…Not only is Jess learning secrets about the grandmother she hasn’t seen in seventeen years, but her mother as well.
This is a very good debut novel. Nora Carroll is a talented author. She possesses the ability to grab you and pull you into the story. You feel like you are right there with the characters. You are seeing what they see, hearing what they hear. What a journey! It held my interest from beginning to end.
The Color of Water in July was an incredibly memorable story. With better editing, it would have been a 5 star read for me. That’s all I can say without spoiling the book for you...
Wow, that is all I can say! Wow! This is not at all my normal genre (though I do have a guilty pleasure in Chick Lit from time to time) This is not Chick Lit either, this story was a complete surprise to me. I liked the synopsis, it was free and I thought it would make a great summer read.
This story is hauntingly beautiful, rich in descriptions and vivid in its poignancy. It starts with Jess Carpenter, 33, living in a small apartment in a dull job with her boyfriend Russ. Jess has just inherited her family home situated on a lake in Michigan. She hasn't been back to the house since she was 17 years old. She is going back now, she is going to sell the house and finally put her past behind her.
The story is told from three POV, Jess as she is now, her 17 year old self and Maime, her grand mother. Jess would summer with her throughout her childhood because her mother Margaret was away being an international journalist. The story centers mainly on her last summer...
