As a farmer wanting to start a grass-fed cattle operation I thought this would be a good choice, but it was not. The author doesn't even have any experience with cattle, which he mentions in his preface. To me this was a bad sign from the beginning. I have read quite a few books on farming and grass-fed cattle, and most of them I enjoy, but this one was not interesting to read at all. It was a struggle to even get through it. The information presented in this book is very basic, something someone who'd never been around a farm or cattle would read. I consider a book good and useful if I am able to take just one idea from it and apply it to my situation. Didn't even get one idea from this book. It was so bad I sold it back to Amazon. Instead of wasting your money and time with this book, I highly recommend: Grass-Fed Cattle by Julius Ruechel and Salad Bar Beef by Joel Salatin. If you are also interested in rotational grazing, which you should be if you plan to do grass-fed... Read more
What a total disappointment! This book covers everything you "should" learn but tells you absolutely nothing. For example, it talks about poisonous plants being "really bad" and that you should research what they are and gives a government website to visit. What a joke! The entire book can be rewritten on one single page! I'll save you the money right now, if you want to learn anything about cows and grass just google it! This is what you are buying when you purchase this ridiculous book--it's a reference on what you should research online!
Not a bad book for general information about raising cattle on grass. However, after several years of actually raising cattle on grass, I find myself referring to Julius Ruechel's "Grass-Fed Cattle: How to Produce and Market Natural Beef" all the time, while I have never referred to this book. Buy Ruechel's book and skip this one.
