Additional Information

David Murray plays mainly tenor saxophone and sometimes bass clarinet. He has recorded prolifically for many record labels since the mid-1970s. Murray was initially influenced by free jazz musicians such as Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp. He gradually evolved a more diverse style in his playing and compositions. Murray s use of the circular breathing technique has enabled him to play astonishingly long phrases. This set features five of Murray s albums at a special low price.

Five discs-39,37,40,40,43 minutes each approximately. The remastered sound is crisp and clean and open sounding. Each disc comes in it's original album cover. These are inside a fairly substantial cardboard box, which lists the album titles, players, and song titles on the rverse. There's no booklet, just whatever notes or information is on the back of each cardboard holder.

As the title states, this set contains all the albums Murray recorded with his octet group for the Black Saint/Soul Note label. This is just one of several sets they've released, in the same format, featuring other fine jazz musicians-check them out!

Both albums feature some very fine musicians besides Murray-including Olu Dara-trumpet, Butch Morris-clarinet, George Lewis-trombone, Henry Threadgill-alto sax (and who has a fine box set in this series), Anthony Davis-piano, Wilbur Morris-bass, and... the average length of listening time per cd is 40 minutes, not a lot of music were the cds purchased separately, but as a box set the five cds here are a bargain. the recording took place spanning the 80s, from 1980 to 1988, a period murray was busy accompanying amiri baraka and as part of the world saxophone quartet. the world saxophone quartet recorded a tribute cd to the music of ellington in 1984. listening to some of the selections in the octet collection, i'm reminded of ellington, how murray's small orchestral work traces the history of jazz from the period jazz, credit lester young - as murray does in the signature piece--for his superb solos in the orchestral setting, when men disappointed their ladies when they stopped dancing to listen to the singular voices ushering in the smaller groups which was pretty much the end of dancing to jazz. a leap forward to the 21st century has the front singer for david murray, macy gray, encouraging the audience to get out of their seats...
