Jacobus Arminius (aka Jacob Arminius, James Arminius, and his Dutch name Jacob Harmenszoon), was a Dutch theologian, best known as the founder of the anti-Calvinistic school in Reformed Protestant theology, thereby lending his name to a movement which resisted some of the tenets of Calvinism-known popularly as Arminianism. "Concerning God, the primary object of theology, two things must be known, (1.) His nature, or what God is, or rather what qualities does he possess? (2.) Who God is, or to whom this nature must be attributed. These must be known."-- James Arminius, Disputation Fifteen: On the Nature of God. "Angels are substances merely spiritual, created after the image of God, not only that they might acknowledge, love and worship their Creator, and might live in a state of happiness with him, but that they might likewise perform certain duties concerning the rest of the creatures according to the command of God."-- James Arminius, Disputation Twenty-Five: On Angels in General and in Particular. Lamp Post and the Christian Classics Ethereal Library are proud to present some of the finest Christian literary works of all time-writings that have affected the Church, touched the hearts of its leaders, and helped shape Christianity for two thousand years; timeless books that have endured and are deserving to be included among the Christian Classics.

Arminius is, in many ways, the most tragically neglected thinker in Protestantism. Calvinists dismiss him as a heretic, and Wesleyans are often ignorant of his influence on John and Charles Wesley's theology. As a result he is either falsly vilified or completely ignored.
This is a shame because it is Arminius, even more than Wesley, who provides the needed counter-balance to the logical problems with hard-core Calvinism. Arminius makes the case that human free will response to God's grace is not works righteousness and does not diminish the sovereignty of God one iota.
So if you are a Methodist who doesn't know how to answer tough questions from Calvinists or you are a Calvinist who wants to see if your theology stands up under fire, this should be required reading.
This Kindle edition feature a functional menu and pretty decent formatting. It isn't as enjoyable as the paper versions, however it is far less expensive which makes this edition an...
I'm slowly working my way through Arminius' writings. Obviously the way people wrote back then requires a little patience from us, but it is patience well rewarded. As a long-time convinced Arminian myself, I am still challenged by Arminius' "common sense" view of salvation. He acknowledges that God is a sovereign, loving God whom you can trust, while at the same time pointing out that God is not a despot who arbitrarily takes it upon Himself to decide the eternal destinies of human beings for them, but gives them sufficient grace, enabling them to make this choice for themselves, and then to be held personally responsible for their decision. Unfortunately, James Arminius is misunderstood far more than he is read. Hopefully more people will make the effort to first read his writings before administering the tar and feather treatment at the mere mention of his name. Arminius is a difficult but worthwhile read . . . not for anyone seeking easy answers to the complex problems of life...
The Complete Works of James Arminius is very long. It helps to have read the history of the time and remember that some of the papers are academic and some are discussions on what will be the official stance of the Dutch Reformed Church be. I enjoyed his Orations the most. These are not the points that I have heard related to his writings, yet here he discusses theology, the author, the end of theology, sacred theology, the priesthool of Christ and reconciling religious dissensions among Christians. The Orations are an eye opener.
