Much enjoyed Mr. Feiler's book. Glad to know he's cancer free and doesn't have to rely on the Council to substitute as dad for his girls. However, his daughters' lives will be richer for the steps he took to make sure different facets of his personality would be "remembered" to them by the special men he chose to be members of The Council. It takes one man to be a dad, but in Mr. Feiler's case it would take (at least) six men to stand in his stead. It's heartening to know his daughters still have their #1 Dad to tell them stories and tuck them in at night.
You're the father of 3-year-old twin daughters, a best-selling author whose work is so good, so important that PBS turned one of your books into a documentary series, but here's the doctor telling you that you have bone cancer that likely will kill you. What do you do?
Most likely, you and your wife cry, and pray, and seek the best medical care you can find.
Bruce Feiler and his wife did all that, but Feiler also did something else. He organized a group of friends, a team of men, a council of dads to stand ready to teach Feiler's daughters what he might not be here to teach them himself.
Feiler also did something else, something that writers must do: he wrote about it. He wrote about the men, what they had taught him, and would teach his daughters, and about other men- his father and grandfathers and mentors - and what they had taught him. He wrote it all into The Council of Dads: My Daughters, My Illness, and the Men Who Could Be Me.
This isn't so much a review as it is sharing an idea. My 33 year-old son was recently killed in a motorcycle/vehicle accident. At his funeral, the family friend who was officiating told the attendees about this book, and challenged my son's friends to become 2 1/2 year old daughter's "Council of Dads." There was not a dry eye in the place. My daughter and I have ordered MANY of these books to give as gifts to those friends. She created a label for the front fly sheet, with the recipient's name, a photo of my son and his little girl, her birthdate, and her mother's contact information. This way, his friends can stay in touch with her in the coming years. This is a wonderful book which we are happy to pass along to special men, as a memorial to my son's life, and in honor of his daughter.Thank you to Mr. Feiler for his story, and for sharing it with us and others!
