Upstairs Downstairs was one of the first British shows I watched with my mother. As a teen it wasn't always easy to look past the 70's hair and set styling to the story but the stories were so good. They were restrained, well developed, thought out. You came to care for the characters even the ones you didn't like. I recently re-watched the series and decided to follow it up with season 1 of the new reboot that I'd watched when it was on PBS. When I saw it as it aired, I couldn't put my finger on what I thought about it but now, watching back to back with the original, I think I can. The reboot is flat, like champagne left sitting out all night after a party. I don't love anyone, nor do I hate anyone. There is no chemistry between the mistress and master of the house leaving me to wonder at the chemistry between the master and his royal friend. That seems entirely unintentional. I loved Downton Abbey and hoped to enjoy this after someone told me this was good. After watching several episodes I have given up. I just don't connect with the characters as I did on DA. The acting was awful especially Ivy's bawling-couldn't get much more fake than that. I believe someone told me there was another Upstairs Downstairs before this and this is more of a sequel so maybe that's the one I was told about. Eileen Atkins and Jean Marsh was top notch however so I upped my rating to 3 just for them but they are absent from the 2nd season which I did not finish.
This is the second Upstairs Downstairs series, picking up where the original series left off. It would soon be eclipsed by its younger sibling, the far superior Downton Abbey. This series couldn't meet the standard set by the original series, and could not achieve what Downton Abbey achieved, which was a magnificent upgrade from the original Upstairs Downstairs. Downton Abbey was a deeply subtle, intimate and complex portrait of the times; by comparison, this is a made for TV movie. On its own terms, it's good - but it cannot withstand comparison to its superior siblings.
