In this “invaluable addition to any collection” (School Library Journal, starred review) high school senior Zephyr Doyle is swept off her feet—and into an intense and volatile relationship—by the new boy in school.
His obsession. Her fall.
Zephyr Doyle is focused. Focused on leading her team to the field hockey state championship and leaving her small town for her dream school, Boston College.
But love has a way of changing things.
Enter the new boy in school: the hockey team’s starting goaltender, Alec. He’s cute, charming, and most important, Alec doesn’t judge Zephyr. He understands her fears and insecurities—he even shares them. Soon, their relationship becomes something bigger than Zephyr, something she can’t control, something she doesn’t want to control.
Zephyr swears it must be love. Because love is powerful, and overwhelming, and…terrifying?
But love shouldn’t make you abandon your dreams, or push your friends away. And love shouldn’t make you feel guilty—or worse, ashamed.
So when Zephyr finally begins to see Alec for who he really is, she knows it’s time to take back control of her life.
If she waits any longer, it may be too late.

This book took me places within myself--and within the minds and hearts of the characters-- that I didn't even realize existed. By the end of the story, I was trembling with emotion.
Shannon M. Parker has created an intense, remarkable, beautifully-written portrait of what it looks like when a girl--or any human being--is slowly persuaded at a vulnerable time in her life to give up everything that really matters to her...including her own true identity.
The story ultimately delivers a powerful message; a message of realistic hope.
But the book doesn't read like a "message". It feels like a story your best friend in college might tell you about what happened to her in high school. And you would look at your brilliant, field-hockey-star friend with the great smile, and think: how the hell did this happen to such a person, with everything going for her? The answer is, of course: it can happen to ANYONE. Because it starts up so slowly, so...
This book, you guys. It's so creepy and I really felt for Zephyr. By the end, I was feeling incredibly claustrophobic; the author does an amazing job of making the reader feel just how small her life has become and just how much of herself she's closed off in order to make Alec happy.
The only problem I had is the fact that while Alec certainly exhibted some of the biggest signs of being abusive (most notably isolating Zephyr from her family and friends and becoming incredibly controlling about what she did and who she saw), he wasn't really physically abusive until the end---and then he became incredibly violent. I'm not sure that that's how it works. (Doesn't it start a lot smaller than, say, a punch to the face or smashing someone's head into a cabinet?)
This is such an important novel and I hope people read it and learn more about the signs of abusive relationships. It's so easy to fall into this pattern, and it really doesn't start with a huge outburst...
(Loved it so much that I would give it more than five stars if I were allowed.)
This is my favorite kind of novel: one I can get lost in; one with rich, believable, authentic characters; one with a main character you can’t help but root for as she navigates compelling crises. Not only are the characters and the story fabulous, but the writing itself is wonderful too: crisp and vivid and a pleasure to read. So this is a win-win-win, from start to finish!
Zephyr is a girl we can all relate to (even though I was not at all athletic in high school--understatement!--and she is a talented athlete, I still feel like I can connect with her, can put myself in her shoes). She’s a smart, responsible young woman who has her future planned out (well, as much of it as she can see from where she stands at the present moment), and it’s an unknown variable that suddenly threatens all that she’s worked for--a variable that would have had no impact on her if...
