Additional Information

The Simpsons is one of the longest running, funniest, most irreverent, and, according to some religious leaders, the most theologically relevant show on television today. Journalist Mark Pinsky explores the religious and spiritual aspects of Bart, Homer, and the rest of cartoon’s first family––a show strongly denounced by many conservative Christians back in 1989, but now viewed favorably by fans from all across the theological spectrum.

Pinsky looks at the use of God, Jesus, heaven and hell, the Bible, prayer in the Simpson household, the evangelistic next-door neighbor Ned Flanders, and the town’s church and pastor, Rev. Lovejoy. He also discusses whether the character of Lisa is the voice of Jesus, and explores the many moral dilemmas that the characters, in particular Bart and Homer, face. Pinsky concludes with a discussion that suggests that, on the whole, The Simpsons is supportive and not subversive of faith. This is must reading for any Simpsons’ fan, and an insightful exploration of how religion and faith influences popular culture.

I found Pinsky's book to be both humorous and analytical. In the body of the text, you are not just treated to opinion. Pinsky does a great deal to pull quotes, references, and more from critics of the show as well as the creators. In this book you are treated to a delightful look at religious ideas that are found within Christendom, and other religions in the eyes and mouths of the Simpsons. With call outs to specific episodes, and even comic book elements, this is a great read for those that are looking for religious meaning in one of pop culture's best shows ever.

Overall, the writing is crisp, the research is done very well, and you're going to be delighted by the way the gospel message may be presented in an unlikely resource. It's a fast read, but one that is overtly entertaining, while shining light on the ideas of Christian living, and more. It's NOT an evangelistic book, mind you, but rather a survey of the central religious themes and ideas that are found on many... Read more
I enjoyed reading this book. It was a lot of fun. It definitely comes from an Evangelical Protestant background, but I enjoyed it as a Catholic. One fun fact is that Ned Flanders is not necessarily treated as a the prime example of evangelical Christianity since he relies more on works than on his own relationship with Jesus Christ. I think the point was well made: The Simpsons is one of the only shows on television that the characters regularly attend church together, who pray as a family, and treat God as a friend. It doesn't mean that the Simpsons is a religious show by any standard, but it is a good reflection of American religion and faith for mainline persons who call themselves Christian.
Too often Television is dismissed as a light souffle, with no real core or message, except for those occasional "inspirational" series, or the occastional message TV movie. Animation is even more dismissed as just some drawings, and the juvenile joys of Saturday morning. But Pinsky goes further and delves below first impressions to show that an extremely strong message of religion underlies many episodes of the Simpsons. Certainly it underlies more than most other shows on, or produced, without a religious bend to it. The world of Springfield is not perfect - people fall, religion is questioned and mocked, but it is also explained, highlighted and the diversity is pointed out, even if it is in a backhanded humorous way. Pinsky goes through a number of episodes and provides concrete examples of positive (and sometimes negative) images that are really there. We are human, and thus apt to make mistakes, or falter in our faith - and the Simpsons are the same. But theirs is a... Read more
