Lyrical, dark, comic or iconoclastic, the Irish short story has always punched well above its weight. Anne Enright has brought together a dazzling collection of Irish stories by authors born in the twentieth century - from Mary Lavin and Frank O'Connor to Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry. With a pithy and passionate introduction by Enright, The Granta Book of the Irish Short Story traces this great tradition through decades of social change and shows the pleasure Irish writers continue to take in the short-story form. Deft and often devastating, the short story dodges the rolling mythologies of of Irish life to produce truths that are delightful and real.
Also includes stories by: Maeve Brennan, Roddy Doyle, Mary Lavin, Colum McCann, William Trevor, John McGahern, Colm Toibin, Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry.

I have many books of short stories, Russian, American and this one is my absolute favorite. The stories are pure gems, the characters developed so well, you feel you've know them somewhere. I wished some of the stories would continue and never end, they were so good. I am of Irish descent (a narrowback) and this harkens me to days when I labored along side workers from Ireland here in America, I have known many of them. The surnames, mannerisms, their wit and warmth are a breathe of fresh air in this vary modern world of ours. The stories are simply stated yet have surprising twists, all you would hope for in a short story. I highly recommend anyone to get this book for themselves or as a gift.
Anne Enright has chosen interesting stories from Frank O'Connor and Sean O'Faolain to Edna O'Brien ("Sister Imelda") and Mary Lavin ("Lilacs") to those written by contemporary writers such as Claire Keegan and Kevin Barry. This anthology answers the need for a teachable text that well represents the variety of the Irish short story in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
Excellent book. I've been looking for a short story anthology for my Irish Studies class for some time, and this one offers a nice variety of styles, from contemporary to more traditional, from well known writers to perhaps some of the more contemporary.
