Additional Information

Inspired by the lore of her Sioux heritage, this “captivating”(New York Times Book Review) critically-acclaimed novel from Susan Power weaves the stories of the old and the young, of broken families, romantic rivals, men and women in love and at war...

Set on a North Dakota reservation, The Grass Dancer reveals the harsh price of unfulfilled longings and the healing power of mystery and hope. Rich with drama and infused with the magic of the everyday, it takes readers on a journey through both past and present—in a tale as resonant and haunting as an ancestor's memory, and as promising as a child's dream.

The author tells the stories of the reservation dwellers from the 1800's to the present a chapter at a time. If you are looking for a straight narrative, don't get this as the author jumps from decade to decade without regard for chronological order. But, if you are looking for great, related stories, this is for you. There is magic, evil, good, death, life, love, hate, ghosts, witches and more. This story held me from beginning to end even though it took some work to keep track of the family connections.
An old favorite, very well written! I love how the stories intertwine, giving you a richly detailed and complex story.
The characters in this book are exceptionally well developed and I really liked how it went back through time and generations to give context to the current events. It was a very enjoyable read and I felt I could see the characters and their personalities quite well.
