I am not a person that usually writes reviews, but not this time. A little background- my father had a heart attack and heart disease. His father died of a heart attack. Naturally I was concerned about me! I am 57 and my chlesterol is high. My doctor strongly recommended statins. BUT- I excercise daily. I have perfect blood pressure. I am a registered yoga teacher and an ACE certified personal trainer. Although my BMI is 27, I am muscular and my body fat percentage is 18%. In other words, I am in exceptionally good shape for my age. So I decided to investigate the need for statins. I read "the great cholesterol myth"- a book written by a cardiologist, which I thought was very good. I continued to investigate. I finally got my hand on this book. Long story short- if you have been told to take statins-READ THIS BOOK FIRST! Bottom line- eat right, think right, and exercise. I wish I could give this 10 stars. I have natural high cholesterol and have had it since my cholesterol was first measured in my 20's. I was told I was going to die of cardiovascular disease. A lot of people in my family have heart disease, some with high cholesterol and some with normal cholesterol hmmmm. I dutifully went on the low fat diet recommended. I followed it consistently for years and years. Then I was put on Statins. My entire family was on Statins (btw statins did not prevent heart disease in my family members) Then 4 years ago I developed "prediabetes" and another family member developed liver problems. hmmm I am a regular exerciser, no family history of diabetes, and am normal weight. I cut out carbs, and still had prediabetes. So now I have two imaginary diseases Hypercholesterolemia and prediabetes. The doctor told me high risk women like me need STATINS! If I get diabetes, they will give me another wonder drug for that condition. ( no more better...
I read Anthony Colpo's Fat Loss Bible and was impressed with how he approached the subject and how it was referenced and as a result I thought I would try The Great Cholesterol Con. I half expected to see a nonsense argument by a man who evidently knows a lot about fitness and maybe has some quack idea about cholesterol. How utterly and completely wrong I was. I had always been troubled by the so-called French Paradox, where the high saturated fat intake of the French didn't seem to equate to high incidences of heart disease. Not liking paradoxes, I did my own research many years ago, hoping to find that the French were manipulating their statistics, however I found no such thing.
