This story finds the Hollister family off to Alaska with Uncle Russ and their two cousins, Teddy and Jean. Russ Hollister, a commercial artist and cartoonist, has run out of ideas and is trying to think of a new location for his comic strip characters. The children, whose interest in the Far North has been aroused by an encounter with an old man and the totem pole he brought back as a souvenir of his adventurous days as a gold miner, persuade Uncle Russ to make Alaska the background for his new cartoon series. The gold miner had told the children that his totem pole is a replica of a pole that holds a secret, which was lost somewhere near Sitka, Alaska. Among them the Hollisters manage to locate the lost totem pole and find, tucked away inside it, the clue to hidden treasure. A most exciting Hollister story that combines the excitement of solving a mystery and outsmarting a sinister thief with the discovery of new places, different traditions and ways of living. A new story that will certainly please all the Hollister fans who look forward so eagerly to each new book in this popular series.

My grandmother had the entire set of these books from the 1950s that my uncle had enjoyed many times. She gave me the first one to read when I was at her house on a school day when I was quite sick and needed to not be home alone. I flat out loved this book at that age and in those days. I was nine and it was 1974. She ended up giving me the entire set and I read them on many a rainy day until I was in high school.
I am 50 years old now and the world of children is much more graphic, violent, sexualized and jaded. I have no kids of my own, but teach hundreds a week as a part of my music program that I carry to several schools every week. I know kids of elementary school age very well and know that, unfortunately, the age of child that would enjoy these mysteries is younger than in my day, but these are too difficult to read for most of them in the communities where I teach.
However, if you homeschool these are PERFECT if your kid is inquisitive and likes solving...
I was reluctant to submit a review as there's little I can add to the warm and wonderful praise already found here, but I've no qualms in writing what amounts to a love letter to these books and their creators. I first encountered these books in the mid-1960's --- an unexpected birthday gift subscription to the Happy Hollisters (Doubleday) Book Club. To this tough little Brooklyn tyke, who much preferred 'Famous Monsters' magazine at the time, the titles of the various volumes intrigued me enough to dip into one after simply shelving and avoiding them once they arrived, and I was soon hooked! True, there were far greater thrills to be found on television or the aforementioned monster magazines, but in retrospect I think the allure to a city kid without siblings was the decidely exotic notion of a large family living in a beautiful suburb in a rambling (to use West's description!) old house set upon a lakeshore who then had the audacity to leave this perfect world on an alarmingly...
I was so thrilled to find this book series again! I read it when I was a little girl, and now I am reading it to my daughter. The Happy Hollisters certainly take you back to a simpler time in life, and it's nice to be in that world when you read. I can't help but see the glaring differences between growing up then and what it's like now! (Example: The kids often took a rowboat out on a lake by themselves - something I would never allow myself.) If you can get past that, it's a fun trip full of mystery, laughs, and innocent fun. No cell phones, no video games, no cyber-bullying…just good, wholesome fun. Jerry West seems to have known how to teeter on the mysterious, without making younger readers too scared. There is a nice little forward from the author's grandson, and the new paperback format is nice too. The pages are gleaming white, and the print is easy to read. I am very happy with this purchase, and I will be ordering others in the series.
