You've read the headlines and seen the news: government crackdowns on Chinese house churches, mass arrests, human rights violations. . . . But is it true? This intensely dramatic autobiography answers that question with the account of how God took a young half-starved boy and enabled him to stand strong for Jesus, braving horrific opposition and impossible odds. For more than thirty years, Liu Zhenying, also known as Brother Yun, has been committed to bringing the gospel of Christ to all of China. Hunted, imprisoned, beaten, tortured, and separated from his wife and children, Brother Yun shares his story of incredible pain and suffering--and of powerful miracles and great joy. Featuring eyewitness accounts of prison escapes and healings, his words focus on the character and beauty of Jesus and challenge any reports that religious persecution is not still a daily reality for millions. Includes photos and reflections from his wife, Deling. A life-changing true story of faith on the frontlines!

Brother Yun's The Heavenly Man is a remarkable testimony of his life as a Christian evangelist in the People's Republic of China from the time of his personal commitment to Christ at the age of 16 (1974) through to his remarkable escape and reunion with his family in Germany in 2001. Along the way we witness the wonderful "religious freedom" of Communist China and tender mercies of atheistic Communism towards uncompromising believers in Jesus Christ. Truly the persecuted Church of China has been watered by the seeds of its martyrs (yet revival continues in China while foolish Western Christians rush headlong into secular socialism like lambs to the slaughter). Brother Yun's book is a remarkable series of adventures in the Holy Spirit. Sometimes mind-boggling, often suspenseful, and frequently heart-wrenching, The Heavenly Man is just the kind of book smug, self-reliant Western Christians need to read to consider their own ways. What I like about this book is that despite the...
This book was recommended to me by a Christian friend who was reminded of it after we started discussing the connection that suffering has with true spirituality. Not being, at all, familiar with such deep persecution for Christ's sake that Brother Yun experienced, my mind was telling me that what I was reading was fabrication, not an account of God's many promises that tell us that one man can put ten thousand to fight, that He is a very present help in time of trouble, and that no evil will come nigh thee.
In fact, this biography states just the opposite. I am obliged to admit that the gospel we live in the US is a far cry from the reality of what it means to serve the Lord with all our hearts. If they hated Him, they will hate us, we are told, but such evil torture has not touched any of our lives as it did Brother Yun and those who served with him in China and throughout that region.
It was a real eye opener that which caused great division among Chinese...
Brother Yun tells the story of his life and conversion and ministry for Christ in mainland China. His mother is a Christian, but all the missionaries and Bibles were sent out of China before Brother Yun was born, so he only knew what his mother could remember.
When he was sixteen years old, he asked his mother for a Bible. She said that it was against the law to own a Bible in China. When he asked a local pastor, he said that Yun should pray and weep for a Bible and God will answer his request (Yun 2002, 26-31).
So Brother Yun fasts and prays to God for a Bible for sixty days. On the sixtieth evening, he has a dream that two men visit him in the middle night and hand him a loaf of bread. When he breaks open the bread, a Bible pops out (Yun 2002, 27-31).
Four hours later, there's a knock on the door. Two men are there with a loaf of bread, and a Bible! He reads the whole Bible in a few short weeks and commits his life to Christ. Christ speaks to...
